Family History Surprises - You Never Know What You'll Discover

Posted on July 26, 2009 at 9:30am 0 Comments

When I first decided to start researching my family history in earnest, I was totally under the belief that I wouldn't get very far. My paternal grandparents were immigrants from Sicily, so I didn;t expect to get much on that side.

The only hope I had was on my mother's side. I knew my grandmother was born in 1895 in Colorado. I am still kicking myself for not realizing the significance of this and asking her questions before I lost her. Nevertheless, I set out to see what I could… Continue

Genealogy - The Perfect Avocation for an Armchair Detective

Posted on July 14, 2009 at 2:30am 0 Comments

I have wondered many times what it is about genealogy research that is so appealing to me. It's more than just knowing the names of ancestors, more even than finding out their individual stories. There's something in the thrill of the hunt, of piecing together all the pieces, reading between lines, following the slightest clue and having it pan out, and the elation that follows when your search is finally culminated and your answer is found.

Except that every answer only open new… Continue

Hi Katrina
I'm replying re your comment on the Military group-

If your father has died, was he buried in a military cemetery? My FIL's grandfather died in a V.A. hospital and on his death record, it indicates he was in WW1, maybe there is a record like this for your father?

Also, was he listed as enlisting in WW2 on Ancestry? Did you try Footnote? They also have WW2 enlistment records.

Hi Katrina,
I meant to respond sooner to your comment, but have been busy. My connection to the Haines goes from my mother Nina Faye Johnson (this is quick so will just give maiden names and no dates for now) her father Charles Cyrus Larkin Johnson his mother Beadie Alwilda Ray her father Larkin Demarcus Ray his father Charles Washington Rea his father Thomas Garwood Rea his father Joseph Rea his mother Rebecca Haines. Also through Joseph Rea's wife Susannah Garwood who was the daughter of Carlisle Haines and Sarah Matlack. It has been a long time since I have worked on this family and I don't have much of the earlier generations in my database so I'm doing this from memory, but this is basically my connection to the Haines family.

Thanks for adding me as a friend! I see your last name is Haney. Would you be related to the North Carolina Haneys that married Ledfords? Look forward to the "interaction"! Deb

Hi Katrina,

I hope to learn a bit about digital scrapbooking in you group. I started scrapbooking years ago to preserve much of my genealogy. I do feel a bit strange writing you though, since I am a Hurricane Katrina survivor. I've read a number of your comments and you are setting up groups all over the place so I guess you are taking Genealogywise by storm. I don't have Pilgrim ancestors, but I have been to Plymouth Rock, Old Salem and to the original Plymouth and seen the spot they departed from.
