Changing the rules: Genealogywise.com

From Tracing the Tribe: The Jewish Genealogy Blog

GenealogyWise.com has changed the rules on its "contest," and may do so again, according to this early morning message from the company.

The rules are somewhat better and not focused on the goal of "grabbing" (quantification) as many members and posting as much as possible. The objective has changed to something more… Continue

Land Deeds as often overlooked sources

I have only been doing genealogy research for about a year and a half. But i also spend 20 hours or more a week on my research. I have become obsessed with genealogy like so many others who get the bug. I am constantly reading books, blogs, forums, etc to increase my knowledge. And one area of sources that i find is often overlooked or under appreciated is the land deed.

I have made several trips from Atlanta, GA to Johnstown, PA to get my hands on lots of documents and among some of… Continue

Researching Frambers/ Frambes

Thought I would post this here in my blog in case anyone happens to see it that lives in Clermont Co., Ohio.

I'm in need of a will for 2 gentlemen: Peter Frambes and his son Andrew Frambes. There could be an "r" in the surname "Frambers."

Peter left a will and Guardianship in 1873 and Andrew & wife Emeline left an estate in 1889.

If anyone in Clermont Co., Ohio would be willing to look these wills up for me please contact me privately at:… Continue

My Search for Norval Valentine Heskett/ Hiskett

Norval Valentine Heskett/ Hiskett is my 4th Great Grandfather and his early life is a total mystery. The only information I have about his early years is from a family history written by my great grandfather in 1947, and of course he didn't cite his sources, so I have no clue how accurate the facts are. The information from ggrandpa states that Norval was born 15 Feb 1805 in Loudoun county, VA, to Benjamin Adam Heskett/ Hiskett. There is no… Continue

Aunt Mary

Mary Irma Lamka (ne Pogany). 1921-1994

Aunt marry was one of the sweetest people I've ever known.

She knew every Polish joke ever conceived and delighted in telling, without malice, each and every one of them.

She adored her cats and annointed the corner in her laundry room in which was kept the litter box the "Pooder room".

She was born Mary Irma Pogany 2 Sep 1921 just one month before she arrived in the United States. Her birth was either in… Continue

Finding long lost relatives

I started my genealogy hobby about 2 yrs ago. I was filling in ancestry charts and posting them all on ancestry.com. I was so deep into it that I started searching brothers, sisters, etc of all the family members that I knew about. I got to my great great grandmother Rachel Reed. I was researching her siblings. I got to her brother Henry Bell Reed and starting working down from there. Lo and behold several generations down the line there was a death notice for someone that had passed away in… Continue

Remember Your Audience

When speaking with relatives about genealogy, most have their eyes glaze over or give a low groan. Jennifer is going to start asking all of these questions about relatives because she is nosey or is going to put the family secrets or family blemishes or all out family craziness in the genelaogy. I actually had an aunt tell me not to discuss my uncle's "blemishes" in my genealogy reports, afraid that my genealogy was nothing more than gossip and a way to make the family blush. Oye!

It… Continue

Invitation to Relate

I am happy to see genealogywise with a social network. I am a member of two genealogy groups and would very much love to know the other members better. However, no one wishes to misuse the group whose purpose it is to share information and help each other with research, so we don't share ourselves --- only our ancestors. But our ancestors are not alive now and we are. . . . alive here on this earth for a short time, with marvelous technology that knits the whole world together. Who more than… Continue

The differences between the GenealogyWise emails

Disclaimer I am not associated in any way with GenealogyWise or FamilyLink.

I have noticed in the groups that I created and participate in some confusion as to the emails that people are receiving automatically announcing comments, discussions, and replies. In the absence of a "help" or "FAQ" document for me to point them towards, I thought I would write up a post on my understanding of them. I spent several years in an IT environment and what seems a lifetime on computers,… Continue

What a great idea!

I have been doing genealogy research with my grandmother and parents for years. The research has been handed down over a couple of generations. I want to get as much done as possible so when it is time to pass it along to my children all they have to do is update it with their spouses and children.

Wouldn't that be great if you had to provide your genealogy back 5 or 6 generations before you could get married? It would at least let you know if you were getting ready to marry a… Continue

More thoughts on the time capsule

I got to thinking about it some more, during a rare moment of solitude today - what I would like to see in the time capsule that I hope to do at our reunion next year (please read my blog about reunion fundraising for more information): A copy of our local newspaper for the week of the reunion

Birth announcements/wedding invitations/graduation announcements/etc. for events that happen around that time

A record of the price of gas at that… Continue

Dealing with ambiguous records.

So, I'm sure that I'm not the only person who has hit a wall in their genealogy research at one point or another. Most of the time, a lack of record is what results in it, but what about when a record gives little to no useful information?

Also, has anyone ever run into a record that either displays false information? For instance, I found a death record from the early 1900s that referred to one of my relatives by a nickname, as well as reporting false information of the… Continue
