US (NY & PA), Germany, Northern Ireland
What is your level of genealogy knowledge?

Well, not exactly an expert, but I concentrate on Western New York families. And I tend to be good at untangling mounds of old papers and photos and making sense of them.
For what reason did you start genealogy research?
My grandmother asked me to go with her to research my great-great-great-grandmother and see if we could find where she was buried. We never did find that answer but I was hooked!

Turns out she does have WHL's birth year: 1846.

He was raised by the McCoy family.

LOL! Just realized I contradicted myself there. My cousin won't have any birthdate on WHL, cause I already know we've been unable to find anything on him prior to age 7.

I need to check with my cousin, she has more info than I do (she's on here too: DeeDee Anglin Shackelford).

My g-g-grandfather that I mention is listed as "William Henry Lowry" on some documents. I don't have his birthdate, so I need to see if my cousin does. Based on his date of death, possibly a son or nephew to your "William H. Lowry". Although I notice your lineage contains two consecutive Williams, so son seems unlikely.

The two predominate maiden-name lineages I have are Harris and Lemmons; if those might ring any bells.

As far as I know we've not been able to trace an immigration to the US. The legend my dad was told was that his William Henry Lowry immigrated from Dublin Ireland as an orphan. We've not been able to corroborate that, but do know he was not raised by a Lowry family; and can find no record of him prior to age 7.

Hi Tara, I noticed you listed Lowry as one of the surnames you are interested in. Me too! My name is John Lowry, I'm 31 years old, and I can trace my Lowry lineage back 5 generations including my own.

My great-great-grandfather was William Lowry, who married Isabel Edmonds, and died Oct 23, 1924. My great-grandfather was Robert Lowry and he married Victoria Harris in 1893. My grandfather was James Lowry, born June 6th 1901, married Josie Lemmons, died July 7th 1976. My father is also John Lowry.

I can trace most of my Lowry roots to Oklahoma and Southern California, with a few in Texas and Tennessee.

If any of those ring a bell for you, I love to swap some information. Or if they aren't familiar and you want the info anyway, I'd still be happy to provide info (and I do have it in a GEDCOM file).

Reflections on our most recent reunion

The fourth annual Gentner family reunion was held this past Sunday. If you have read my previous blogs, you know that I am somewhat worried about reunion apathy, particularly on the part of younger family members.

The day actually started off on a sour note. Rain clouds were gathered and a light drizzle fell for part of the morning. When I arrived at at the reunion site I was greeted by a small contingent of family members who, before saying hello, made it clear how upset they were that… Continue

More thoughts on the time capsule

I got to thinking about it some more, during a rare moment of solitude today - what I would like to see in the time capsule that I hope to do at our reunion next year (please read my blog about reunion fundraising for more information): A copy of our local newspaper for the week of the reunion

Birth announcements/wedding invitations/graduation announcements/etc. for events that happen around that time

A record of the price of gas at that… Continue

Fundraising Efforts

I'm a family reunion advocate.

If you read my blog on family reunion apathy, you'll know that. My mom and I hold a reunion for her siblings and their descendants (doesn't sound like much, but there are over 100 of us feuding, fighting Gentners), and I seem to be, by far, the most enthusiastic participant.

I'm always thinking of fun things to do at our reunions, or related to them. My ideas are usually met with less-than-stellar response though. I would appreciate some input from those… Continue

I'm From A Small Town

I come from a small town. I like it that way.

My dad's parents moved here with him and my aunts when my dad was a toddler. Most of their relatives were still in Pennsylvania, except a couple of my grandma's siblings. They moved her mother up here a few years later, into the house that would later belong to my parents, where I was born. (Well, where I lived when I was born. I was born in a hospital.)

My mom's family, on the other hand, has lived in the same small nearby town for 150… Continue

Family Reunion Apathy

Five years ago, my mom and I started the process of getting all her siblings and their children and grandchildren together. She is one of eight (seven now living), and such a large family coupled with long-standing family disputes, meant that we had never all been together in the same place at the same time. Out of my twenty-seven first cousins, there were at least… Continue
