Hi Terri - The cost of the application is $105. $75 is the application fee and $30.00 for your national dues for one year. You will need to talk to the chapter registrar and find out what the chapter and state dues are as these will need to be paid…

True, the DAR worksheet does not have to be intimidating. It is just your direct line back to your ancestor. Take it one generation at a time from yourself. Fill in birth, marriage, death dates and places, try and use primary source documentation…

Hi Connie,  I'm in a Colorado DAR Chapter, & am one of the State Chairs for Volunteer Genealogists (my job is to teach people how to do apps). I agree with TCallahan. I would not wait; I would put in both your apps at the same…

True, That's great that you just got your DAR application. Keep in mind that there are lots of people in the DAR who are there to help you with your application. It shouldn't be an intimidating process because you shouldn't be left…

Connie, there is no reason to wait for your mother's application, unless you want to make sure she's verified before you pay your application and membership fees. Part of that is non-refundable if the application is not verfied. If you…

Don't forget to check out the genealogical research database on the DAR website. You can look at everyone who's joined under your patriot and see which one is the closest match. That can help the registrar at your prospective chapter order…

I just received my Application for DAR and it's on my Maternal side. I am in the process of collecting data. It's a very intimidating application. I will be hopefully joining the one here in KY, even tho my Patriot is from PA where I was…

Terri,     Have you looked for your guy on Footnote.com (now Fold3.com)? They have within the last couple of weeks opened up their collection of Revolutionary War information...pensions, land grants, etc. It might be worth your while.

A New Educational Option

Genealogy has been a huge part of my life. I have a passion for my own research and a passion for teaching others how to search for their genealogical treasures. I have friends who have been able to break down their brick walls thanks to my counseling and thanks to my education in genealogy I have been able to break down the most stubborn brick walls in my own family tree.

A new opportunity has opened for me to not only expand on my own genealogical education, but also for me…

Ancestors Connect Us to History

I have a passion for America unmeasureable to anything else in life. I'm scared that our current politicians have forgotten the definition of words that make life truly worth living, such as freedom and democracy. My passion and love for my country came in elementary school when I was taught to have pride in my country. In private school, I was not taught a party line. I was taught about the rich history of this great nation, the good and the bad. My passion only grew when my maternal…

Getting back into the swing of things...

Grad school began in September and my life has been a blur since then. The school year also began in September for my kids and since I homeschool meant more work for me as well. I also worked on developing two courses for the National Institute for Genealogical Studies (www.genealogicalstudies.com). Both should be complete in the next couple of months, I hope. So, with all of this and the normal day to day responsibilities (housework, playing… Continue

For My Grandparents

One aspect of my life that sometimes makes me sad is that I didn't know either set of grandparents very well. My paternal grandparents were both born and raised in a small New York town. They moved out to California after all three of their children had settled here. They moved to a small farm in Paradise and then when they could no longer keep up with the farm, they moved to Chico where they both died. My paternal grandmother died 24 Apr 1990, a day shy of her birthday. I was in seventh grade.… Continue

The DAR and My Next Move...

As some of you know, one of my major genealogy goals is to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A few weeks ago I requested a Patriot Lookup for my ancestor Martin Graves, to see if he was already a recognized patriot. Within days I had received an email stating that Martin Graves had indeed been recognized by the DAR. A few weeks ago I faxed off the request for a copy of the original application. After weeks of waiting for a copy of the application, checking the… Continue

Hi Jennifer. I think you gave a chat on Educational Opps Part 2 recently that I unfortunately had to miss. Do you have a transcript or any notes from this chat you could send to me at annamtc@aol.com? Thanks much!

Jennifer,
Check out your local library or nearby ones. They are all different, but my local library has a large section of video, audio, computer games and programs. Just an Idea.

Hi Jennifer and thanks for the invite. This has been an interesting journey on GenWise so far since I joined the other day. It's interesting also that you received so many replies about your search for gen software. They are all very informative.
