What do others do when you have a photo of a tombstone with one spouse living and one spouse deceased. I see basic options: (1) don't add the photo when one person is still alive; (2) edit the photo so that the living person's name is blocked; or (3) add the stone as is. Perhaps there are other options. What is the recommended approach? I just took a number of photos from a cemetery and there are numerous in this camp. Suggestions? Thanks.

Of possible interest to FAG addicts, is a new website - http://www.gravestonephotos.com/index.php

Mainly has coverage of the United Kingdom, but is looking for volunteers worldwide to take photographs of gravestone's. Is very family history based linking named people together, the photos are available on request via email.

Cindy, they are most probably fence posts as others have said. I have seen many like them. An iron rail ran through the tops. They usually delineated family plots.

There are some funeral homes who also sell tombstones, this may be more common in small towns. But, a local monument company would probably know more about the care and maintenance of gravestones.

As the business of funeral homes is to conduct funeral services, I doubt that very few if any have working knowledge of the care and preservation of the stone used for grave monuments. A better choice would be a local stone monument carving company, as their profession is dealing with stone in its many forms, and, their business demands that the finished product endure. In another direction, the employee of a large cemetery whose specialty is gravestone maintenance might have good knowledge.

Rebecca, Have you been able to talk to the funeral home about the spray? I am curious about what they said, I'm sure others are too.

I spoke to the company, and they assured me there were no "harmful chemicals." I think what I'll do is go to the local funeral home and see what they think. Maybe if they've got some old stones, they'll let me try it out. With my luck, they probably would sell me a bottle of water!
