Blake, I agree with you: do not chalk. Plus: do not make rubbings, do not use flour or cornstarch. There is a method of using aluminum foil for photographing hard-to-read inscriptions. A squirt of water can also do wonders.

However, I have to disagree with you on using a 'cleaner'. Us hobbyists (vs. professionals who know what kind of stone they're dealing with, what kind of chemical reactions cleaners can cause, etc.) should stick to PLAIN WATER and a SOFT bristled brush. On the FAG forums, the professionals recommend 4" paint brushes. Some of the chemicals and cleaning methods once advocated cause damage that takes years to become apparent. Better to do no harm...

I wish people would stop chalking grave stones. I went to a cemetery in Union MO and they had chalked some of the gaves stones on the ones I wanted to take pics of. There is a cleaner you can buy for the stones why not use that instead of chalk,

Just did a count of how many people I have added to my family tree that I have found on findagrave.com. Can't believe I am at 495 people. This is a great site!

Took & posted my first photos on FAG today. Yeah! Was able to fulfill one photo request & added some that weren't listed yet. Good day!! Now if I could just find that one nagging grave for a photo request I'd be a happy camper :)

Yea I have never had any problems with cemeteries. Most people have never even heard of FAG

I can see that things are very different from cemetery to cemetery. I had taken a few photos at a cemetery in Dakota County, MN that had less than 10 people in my family tree. Then I got locations for a few FAG requests and had no trouble from the office. There is an email address provided at the FAG cemetery page and I started using it. Last spring I noticed that of the nearly 500 memorials, more than half did not have marker photos with them. I emailed the general manager and told him of my intent to add photos for the 'missing'. I suggested sending Excel spreadsheets in alphabetic 'chunks', over a period of time. I then asked if they [office staff of two] would provide locations. I could sense a bit of reluctance at first, but they agreed. Now the number is in excess of 300 locations they have provided and we are all on a first-name basis. They cheerfully provide locations whether I walk in the door or send an email.
It is sad to hear of some of the bad experiences you folks have had. Worse yet when they start charging an hourly rate. I suppose there will come a time when we will only be able to take the photos after the requester has first obtained the locations for us.

Oh, I forgot to add, the cemetery where I go, mostly, is one of the largest in the U.S., not out in the country. My comments are aimed at the larger cemeteries.

When I first started taking photos for FindAGrave at our local cemetery, I think the ladies there (that were almost always the same) thought I was taking photos for profit. When it came up one day, I told them I had volunteered to take the photos for someone who live across the country. Also, this cemetery has their grave locations on-line now and I am familiar with their grave numbering system (most of the time). When I do need help, the cemetery security officers are usually touring around and willing to help. They also carry the grave location books in the car trunk. Most of them a delightful and willing to help.

As the previous person commented ... don't ask for multiple grave locations. These people are there to help families of the burials. Like everywhere else in your life, have good manners, and stand back when someone comes in for help.

i just looked at that review. yeah, if your gonna go in there asking for 25 names at once, then what do you really expect? :) everything in moderation :)

Woodlawn in Everett, Mass also hask for like a 55$ charge for genealogical lookups. I just call them and tell them I want to know where someone is located. No problems. just don't ask for more than a couple at a time. The people at Woodlawn know i'm a photo volunteer, too. so as long as you dont overdo it, theres no prob.

I think Holy Cross in Malden, Mass does the same charge thing. I handle them the same way.

If all else fails, fib. tell them your family and want to visit lol
