When reporting work I contact the site first, most internet sites, including Find a Grave, and this site will remove copyrighted work. All you do is contact the site owner. I have yet had to do that, but know the process how to. As for the photos volunteered in the name of genealogy free grabs, shared amongst family yes, but if they ask for a photo that can be printed as an 8*10 and published for profit no.

Thanks Dawn, you got me off the hook with Eric, I will watch what develops with you two.

Dawn, my apologies. I thought that's what you meant when you said, "There are sites to sell photos, AND IF I FIND MY WOK ON THEM I DO REPORT IT. Sharing fine, selling, nope!" I'm very aware of the copyright laws and how they work and didn't say you shouldn't protect your work. The topic was whether photos volunteered in the name of genealogy are up for grabs or not.

Eric, I never said anywhere that I was reporting people for copyright, but there are ways to keep people from using copyrighted work. As a professional genealogist I have the right to protect my work. As you have the right to give it for free. I will not debate the issue with you, but there are laws about publishing for profit copyrighted work without proper permission.

My apologies, I didn't know I should have been posting to a discussion board instead of here. What is the purpose of the comment wall, then? What goes here instead of in a discussion? I posted one thing and when people started chatting with me, I thought that's what this was for.

I'm like Shirley...anything I volunteer in the genealogy world is up for grabs, no credit necessary. I'm not out for fame and fortune when it comes to genealogy. Any picture, document or information I post on the internet is fair game for anyone to use any way they see fit. If I don't want it used, I don't put it there. I have my own TNG website for my family tree and there are certain items there that only people who join can see. Even then, if it's there, I expect that they'll use it in their family trees, without my permission and without giving me credit. To me, genealogy is a world-wide cooperative effort and not about who took what photo. It's not Time magazine.

As far as copyrights, one doesn't need to file ANYTHING for a copyright to be valid. The moment you take a photo, you own the copyright to it. Formally filing for a copyright only gives you ammunition if you need to pursue copyright infringement.  To do that, you need to file a lawsuit. I'm not sure who you're reporting people to, Dawn, there's no copyright police for photos.

No you dont have to use the copyright and you can always waive the copyright. When people publish my work, I do ask that they give credit for the time it took me to take the photo

As for the gas thing, lately I have had to curve how often I go out because it is getting a little out of hand $$$ wise. If it is an older cemetery, with old unstable gravestones, I have to leave the car running with my 14 yr old watching the little ones, so cant really afford that lately. Any hobby is expensive, I have two professional "hobbies" that cost a lot. One hobby was to pay for gas to continue my volunteer work for F.A.G

Shirley, I agree. I would much rather have the please and thank yous thrown my way too. I don't do it for payment, I do it for fun. I love to go out "cemetery hopping" and taking pictures. Dawn, yes, I am hoping someday to do a family book, so maybe I might want to check into a copyright for that reason. Just because you have a copyright doesn't mean you have to use it, right? My husband fusses at me because I'm "wasting my gas and time and money" doing findagrave. I tell him it's my time, my money and my gas, and it's a lot cheaper than a lot of other hobbies I could have!!!

The photo size posted on F.A.G are too small to get a quality print from. Now when someone wants one that they will be adding to work they intend to publish for profit, ie the family books that are published and bought, a copyright is good business practice. I did not drag my 3 little ones out to the cemetery to teach them to do good  for others while at the time those intend on making a profit off my work.

I didn't intend for it to be a "dig" to anyone.  Just saying that I thought this was a volunteer site that was for giving and receiving for family and fellow genealogists.  I have found much information for my family here and the praises and thank you's received for putting names and pictures on the site are more than payment for what I have done.

Shirley, when you go out to a cemetery and take pictures for findagrave, and you post them, fine, people can take them and use them, provided they give you credit instead of taking all the glory. The problem I have is that I've driven 200-300 miles on more than one occasion to take my own family pictures/markers, just to turn around and have a "cousin" take them and use them, and crow about their accomplishments. I guess that's my own fault for posting the ones that I don't want used, as findagrave is a public site. However, you don't need to get a "dig" in to those of us that don't believe the way you do. It goes both ways.
