I GUESS I REALLY AM GREEN.  HOW DO YOU COPYRIGHT YOUR PICTURES AND WHY,

Eric, this is not a forum on which to complain about Find A Grave. It's a place for volunteers to discuss creating memorials, locating cemeteries, and photographing headstones. Obviously, it's ok to discuss issues we have with the site, but it is NOT a place to post a lot about a personal vendetta against the site. I recommend that you start a thread on the discussion board where you (and any others) can discuss issues and problems with the site, and don't tie up the wall with it. Thanks. In fact, I'll go and create a thread for that purpose.

And Eric I have my work on other sites, all photos I submit are copyrighted and can not be used by others. If you dont like them, fine go to the other sites out there that have the same features available. This is volunteer work, we do this to help others out, not as self promotion.

Well Dawn, just hope you never tick them off and they delete all your work with a quick click of a button on their computer!

Not every volunteer place works for everyone, F.A.G isnt the only volunteer cemetery posting site. And I myself have all of my family history names, location done, now it is just verifying their grave sites, so 400 in one night isnt a far reach when you use F.A.G spreadsheet to upload information.

Really? People have that many requests?! That's ridiculous.
Comment by Julia Mitchel on March 21, 2011 at 11:39am

My issue with some of the requestors is they have over 300 and 400 requests on FG.  Either they are supurb genealogists and these are their families, or they are just sitting at home posting randomly and tying up volunteers time.

Time the volunteers could be using to find actual relatives that mean something to the people. There I go again, I am sure these requests would mean something to someone.

I'm with you on that Julia. It would be interesting to know how many use it for genealogy and how many use it solely as a hobby to submit memorials. The top two contributors have over 100,000 memorials each! For a short time I was trying to enter the obituaries from my local paper, but found that someone had always gotten to them before me, which meant they were doing it in the wee hours of the morning before I got up.

Jim Tipton has the wrong attitude for what genealogists need FindAGrave to be about and has clearly rounded up like-minded administrators. I'd hate to see all those memorials lost, but I think for the sake of genealogy and accuracy, something needs to be started from the ground up, without all the egos, politics and need for fame.

I use Find a Grave as a research tool and a way to help people get photos of their relatives they cannot get otherwise. I do this freely and for free with no agenda.

I post my own relatives, I do not post hundreds of random obituaries to run up my numbers, what is the prize for this? Dying with the highest numbers on FG?

Find a Grave in my opinion has outgrown their small initial site and purpose and maybe with encouragement they will improve and hire more staff.  If they do, without ads, this will eventually cost us a fee. It may be worth it.

Thought you all would like to read Jim Tipton's (Findagrave's owner) response to my Better Business Bureau complaint, and my subsequent response. My Blog
