I have a passion for America unmeasureable to anything else in life. I'm scared that our current politicians have forgotten the definition of words that make life truly worth living, such as freedom and democracy. My passion and love for my country came in elementary school when I was taught to have pride in my country. In private school, I was not taught a party line. I was taught about the rich history of this great nation, the good and the bad. My passion only grew when my maternal…

A frequent visitor to our genealogical society, Colleen Fitzpatrick PhD came to set the scene of her story with a combination of logic and humor. I always enjoy hearing her speak. It was a story of mystery and intrigue. One man with a mysterious past and two families who were descended from him. She combined modern DNA research with tried and true genealogy research methodology. She was searching for current descendants using the Census, City Directories, the phone book, electronic databases as…

I posted on Genealogy Wise the inability of late to search ALL NINGs for genealogy related groups. There was a feature that allowed for this early in NING's development that has since passed on so to speak. I've Googled a few sites that were cached and here are the groups that I found, "
NINGS genealogy files". If you know of another…

Often in my classes I am asked what is the best method of storing pictures on a computer, after they have been scanned or digitally uploaded or downloaded. The questioner typically raises certain issues associated with those pictures. The issues include: A particular person may be called or thought of as John Smith in one picture, J.D. Smith in another and his full name may not as yet have been determined; a person may have several interesting pictures – one on a horse, one in a car, yet…

After a month and a bit more on the road, I'm now back home. It's time to take a break before my interview on Sep. 15 with
Susan E. King and tell you all about my genealogy tour in the US during the month of August.
My first stop was in New Jersey where I spoke to the
Genealogical Society of Bergen County in Ridgewood. More than 50 people heard about the latest MyHeritage.com tools to help…

Juan Ponce de Leon His New and Revised Genealogy the Book Posted on Aug 31st, 2009 by ayesart
The reason for my abscence from these pages has not arisen from creating a plastic work of art or seeking out to discover beautiful nature subjects for my photography but from a different kind of artistic realization.
I have been very busy working upon an important new project. A book!
Juan Ponce de Leon His New and Revised Genealogy.
On 08 28 2009 I uploaded a…

I have often said it borders on a criminal act to fail to write your autobiography. An exaggeration perhaps, but as you research your ancestors how many times have you wished your father? your grandfather? your great grandmother had written theirs? Why extend this family failure?
Here are some reasons to write such a document.
• Simply because you wish to write;
• Your children probably know little of your first,…

As A child growing up and being the first grandson I was always told by my grandfather that "I was the most important Sheaffer" as it was up to me to carry the name on, and until I was 16 I was the only grandson. My grandfather always said he had no other Sheaffer cousins or at least those with the name Sheaffer. This stuck with me throughout my childhood often wondering what happened to all these other Sheaffer's. At around 13 I had a school project on family history, this was exciting to me…

Following a recent local genealogical society meeting, I was thinking about what is lost forever when a person dies. I feel fine, but I wanted to get down some things of which I am likely the last keeper. Otherwise, when I go, they go.
The first was a memory of my Dad and namesake, Deason Hunt. As we walked among the tombstones of Hunt Cemetery in eastern Rusk County, Texas, he was telling some of his memories. At the stone of his Aunt Lou Vicey Hunt Ables (1846-1922), Dad recalled…

When you first get the keys to a new home you are overcome with cognitive dissonance. The uncomfortable tension of feeling elated that you have purchased a house, but overcome with fear regarding the enormity of the responsibility. On a smaller scale, signing up for a new social networking site can have the same feelings of cognitive dissonance. A new member is excited about the possibilities of meeting new people, networking and learning with and from other members, and excited to share their…

This is my first ever Blog Post, gonna stick my "Big Toe In" and see how it feels, not promising any great quotes or earth shattering remedies that will "warm your heart and soul"...just a few observations now and then about this wonderful new oasis for the Genenewbies that are causing their "Old...Young and New Found Research Friends" to have fits of..."Gnashing their Teeth"..."Pulling Their Hair Out" and for those already gone on..."To Roll Over In Their Graves"...
