Hi, I have a similiar situation. My grandmother's mother died in childbirth. She was ( my grandmother) raised by her paternal aunt and uncle. She was never adopted but she was raised as their own. Her baptismal certificate does not have her…

I've had a look at the chat schedule and converted the times and they really aren't UK friendly! Sadly the education chat would have been at about 11pm our time and the one I fancy on 31st August will be held at 3am on 1st September here!…

LOL not silly at all, although I did feel like I sounded like I was some sort of superhero with a special power. Even funnier when I tell you if you took the first letter of each word of my last job title it spelled out HERO :) It amused many of my…

I know how you feel! I'm one of those people who likes to help other people and I really feel as if I can't really help anyone much when it comes to family history. I guess what we have to do is work out what specialties we have. I think…

Thanks Jennifer, that site looks great. Even courses for Librarians and one for New Zealand but no Australia which is my interest. Have yet to check out the chats on GW!

Hi Liz, I wish I had seen this earlier, yesterday I hosted an education chat on GW. But to answer your question quicker, look at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. They have a wide range of genealogical courses.…

Hi Liz, Those courses look good. I like the fact that you can do most of it in your spare time, a blessing when you work! It would also allow me to start off with topics I feel I need brushing up on most. Thank you for the tip.

Hello Sarah, Try Pharos http://www.pharostutors.com/index.php. This is a UK site, I have not used it but believe they have a good reputation. There are US based ones too. Check your local public Library, they may run courses or you could offer…

Courses for people in the UK

I was wondering if anyone on Genwise could help with this? I've been doing my family history for a few years now and recently have been assisting friends start their research. I've thoroughly enjoyed sharing my knowledge. I am also at the moment trying to sign up to a first stage City and Guilds award for teaching the 'lifelong learning sector' so I can teach evening classes. Whilst I didn't apply to be able to teach evening classes in genealogy, the fun I've had sharing my experience with my…See More

I found Firefox was taking up loads of RAM too. I did a bit of playing around and I found a way to make it a little smaller (in my case it was half the size at first which was brilliant!). If you go into 'Tools' and then 'add…

No worries John, so I am I! Sadly I'm in the UK so am not for hire in the US :( Have you tried the local university? Certainly here in the UK we always have students looking for projects to do and they can be very enthusiastic. They should have…

Sorry, new to this. This island was supposedly dredged away during the making of a canal but I have reason to believe only the southern portion was. I thought an experienced person might be able to find the location of the stone house, warf, and…

Archaeology and Family History

When I introduce myself as an archaeologist I generally find that people make assumptions about what that actually means. For a start I get asked about what I’ve been digging up lately and have to explain that not all archaeologists dig. I have (or should I say had?) a desk job. On top of that there is the problem of what period do archaeologists actually cover? We don’t cover dinosaurs, not in the slightest. Archaeology is all about the study of man and as yet no one has found any evidence to… Continue
