WHITE Surname Meaning & Origin:
A descriptive or nickname given to a person with very light hair or complexion, from the Middle English "whit," meaning "white." The name may be also local, derived from the Isle of Wight, on the coast of Hampshire.

In addition, some Whites originally were Wights, from the Anglo-Saxon "wiht" meaning valiant.

Comment by Kim Kevin Callahan on January 29, 2013 at 4:50pm: Looking for suggestions on our White family connection in Ireland. 3rd Great Grandfather Henry Daniel White 1839-1915 & his brother Michael Joseph White 1841-1917 were both born in County Mayo, Ireland. Unknown where in County Mayo they were born at or who their parents might be. Henry Daniel came to Ontario in 1861 and for a time settled in Toronto. He was a surveyor. Brother Michale Joseph came to Ontario in 1867 and was also a surveyor. They both eventually settled in what is present day Elk Point, Union County, South Dakota where they farmed. Any suggestions on where to search in County Mayo would be appreciated as everything I have done at present has not yielded positive results.

Comment by Christine McCloud on January 29, 2012 at 6:59pm: This weekend, I've been focusing on a collateral branch: Ervin Havelock White, who was born in Nova Scotia & moved to Essex County, MA. Out of the 11 children he & wife Alice had, 10 lived to adulthood. Kind of makes up for my sparse line (his aunt Jennie, who had just 2 kids)!

Comment by KIT on September 4, 2011 at 7:52am: WHITE family of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. My line was found on the 1880 Pennsylvania Census. Jacob Brubaker WHITE b. Jan 31, 1832 d. Dec 23, 1900 he was married March 7, 1861 to Christianna ANDERSON b. April 4, 1840 d. Aplril 24, 1929 Records show they had 20 children. Their daughter Ida May WHITE b Otc 6, 1965 d. May 4, 1907 buried at the Union Memorial Park in Irwin, PA. She was my Great Grandmother. She married James A Hammonds May 30, 1899. He was b. in Indiana and d. in Pennsyvania and they had 3 children . His parents were Father William HAMMONS and Mother Mary (Brookman) HAMMONS. I would love to get intouch with anyone researching these names.

My Grandmother was Elizabeth White born February 23, 1884 in Carol County, Tenn., her father was John Wesley White born November 11, 1843 in Wake, Co. North Carolina, his father was Rev. John Wortham White born Nov. 1, 1808, his father was Littleberry White born Sept. 30, 1781, his father was Littleberry White Sr., born May 15, 1750. Any further information would be appreciated.

Comment by Melissa Dawn White on March 7, 2011 at 4:02pm: My great grandfather is Charles White born about 1824 in Idaho, he married Sybil Opel Parker in Minnesota. Their son Billy Geane White was born 21 Aug 1921 at Red Wing, Prairie Island Reservation. Billy married Mildred Eloise Kirtland 26 Dec 1940. He died 21 Apr 1993 in Everett, Snohomish, Washington. My father James is the son of Billy. Can anyone help me with more information on Charles or Sybil.

Comment by Kurt Hartwig on August 26, 2010 at 4:15pm: My grandfather was Dallas White from Fayette county and Montgomery county Illinois. His father was Cleveland, then Ivy, then Stephen Roland White. I think their ancestors came from Adair County, Kentucky.
