For copyright, I always refer to Sharon Bartolomo Carmack's treatise.

I used to assist my old genealogy society in New Mexico with look ups back here in Maryland when I first moved back home at their request and they would definitely be the first to know about copyright infringements and violations. I always cite the exact reference book, page etc that I found the information in. One of the seminars I attended in New Mexico mentioned that as long as you totally cite the source, including publish dates, etc and do not represent the work as your own, you're not infringing on copyright. We had volunteers at the center all the time that did nothing but look up information for people who were unable to get to a place to do it themselves as well as remote volunteers such as myself that helped out.

I see that someone was concerned about making lookups in England, that it could infringe copyright, that only applies if you take that information from a copyrighted Disc or article, as the information as far as i know is in the Public domain, even if it is on a copyrighted Disc, so it is copyright only as far as the Style of the material on the disc, the way it is presented, i can freely go to my local library and ask to see the Birth, Marriage and Death register copies, or go to the county archives, and copy any and all if i wished without infringing copyright, and then give that information freely to anyone that asks for a look up, as many people do. (and there's a kettle of fish!!.)

I'm willing to look up genealogical records in the island of Jersey, Channel Islands.

I don't know about other jurisdictions, but the records on the BC archives are freely available to anyone.. There is definitely no breach of copyright in my doing this type of lookup for others. If I need a copy, then I pay the going rate - about 50 cents.

I am somewhat concerned that many of these look-up offers are in contravention of copyright and licence agreements. All the UK family history societies for instance do not permit blanket look-ups from their CDs and publications. I'm sure that similar restrictions will apply to publications from other countries. Someone from GW really needs to look into this problem and make sure that any offers infringing such agreements are removed immediately.
