My mother (the genealogist extraordinaire) and I (the genealogist tag along on occasion) were able to track down the member of the local DAR who audits, reviews and prepares the local membership applications. We learned that the application information is very focused and specific. It has its own language of proofs that runs a little bit differently than just tracking down census data on the internet. You need proof of relationships through various records, with certain types of records being preferred over others. And if you can link onto proofs others have used for acceptance, you get to kick back, relax, and let the earlier submission do all the heavy lifting for you!

Betty Jo, Do you know if anyone else has entered the DAR or SAR using your ancestor? Are there any published works on your ancestor's surname?

Haven't joined yet. In the process of trying to get all my records and proof gathered together. Having trouble getting it. Any suggestions?

I'm not a member yet but I understand from my paternal grandmother (who passed away last August) that I am eligible. She has mentioned several times that I should join but I didn't know where to begin. I'm glad I found this resource and would appreciate any help in the application process. thanks!

Jennifer:

I'm not sure I'm ready to be an administrator (I just joined Geneaology Wise tonight), but I have been a Daughter for a numbers of years and am happy to help you field questions about the DAR.

I joined the DAR last year, thanks to my Mother's expert genealogy work. So far I haven't been able to make the meetings due to my work schedule. I'm hoping to learn more about being a member of the DAR. Also, my husband & I are hoping to travel to Washington DC with friends this fall. I want to see the DAR museum and am searching out recommendations of "Don't Miss" places, restaurants, things to do, etc. I know we'll never be able to see everything, but it won't stop us from trying! What do you think should be the highlight of our trip?

Jennifer,

What exactly does the job require? Is it really time consuming?

I was wondering if a member of the group who is actually a DAR member would be interested in taking over as administrator. If you are interested please email me. I wanted to start the group so members and potential members had somewhere to go for information and to network. Now that the group has a good number of membership I believe members might get more out of the group if someone more experienced with the DAR and and an actual member were the administrator. Thank you.

I became a DAR member in 1990 in the Esther Stanley Chapter in Connecticut, I was At Large, due to my living in another state. When I moved and left the DAR, I dropped out of the chapter. Now, many years later, I am thinking about rejoining. My patriot was Jonathan Kilborn of Connecticut. In addition, I have about 15 other patriots.
