Elaine - Here's a link that outlines the steps to membership http://www.dar.org/natsociety/content.cfm?id=92&hd=n&pf=n There is a link to a genealogy worksheet towards the bottom; I find the worksheet very handy. You'll need to…

Just a possibility, check Caukley's volumes. They list abstracts of wills which give page numbers and books. When was the county formed? Its possible if it was formed after 1822, that the will is located in another county..you say it was proven…

Betty Jo - Wow. Heritage Quest is my go to source for pensions. Does your local library have JSTOR or Footnote? They may have pensions.

Stacy - Absolutely. It sounds very much like there could be 2 Alexander Hodges. Alexander is no longer in the Patriot Index. The DAR also has a research database in which they have him listed as b. 1762 in PA, d. 17 Aug 1836 in Columbus, Colorado…

She would only have to submit for her generation 1 (herself and if married, her husband). She should be able to reference your national number for everything else. Application preparation won't take as long, but you should expect acceptance by…

Betty Jo: Have you plugged it into WorldCat yet? There's a function in there that'll give you a list of all the libraries that have it. If the Newberry Library (zip = 60610) has it, I can go look it up for you.

Betty Jo - I have had some luck locating old records/books online using Google Books (books.google.com), Internet Archive (archive.org), and Heritage Quest (I access this via my public library's website using my library card). FamilySearch.org…

This sounds a book from the library, in which case, the answer to your question is no. The DAR library has an extensive genealogical collection that is independent of member lineage. However, the library also has access to a collection of patriot…

For the first 3-4 generations, you should use birth/marriage/death certificates whenever possible (you are generation 1). Once you get back before certs were required, there are a number of avenues. Some communities still kept a record of vital…

Hello, Lynette. Yes, the Presbyterians baptize babies. Have you tried to contact the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia? That might be a lead. Also, if you are near the Tuscarora PC, you might check to see if they have the ministerial…

Obviously, the paper trail solution is preferred. However, the dna option can be a useful tool if you know a male Barton from both families. If the descendants match, it says they do have a recent common ancestor. (though it typically won't…

Roger Barton/Anderson Co/Early TN wills

Thumbnail
Does anybody have any idea of where a good place to look for early TN wills is?In particular, I'm looking for the will of Roger Barton, d. 4 Jan 1822. According to the Anderson County Court Minutes his will was proven in Oct 1822. The court minute abstract I found only named his executors. I talked to the Anderson County historian and she told me that (1) she didn't have any wills before 1830 and (2) the only thing she had relating to a will for Roger was a statement to the court that his…See More

Gilbreath Barton s/o Roger Barton and Margaret Gilbreath

I am searching for something that will prove the relationship between Gilbreath and Roger Barton/Margaret Gilbreath. Gilbreath was born in VA (don't know if it was Berkeley or Frederick County) in 1775. He married Eleanor Talbot on 6 Sep 1798 in Frederick Co., VA.They all moved to Tennessee around 1799. Roger would die in Clinton, Anderson Co., TN on 4 Jan 1822. Margaret would go to Knox Co. to live with one of her daughters and die on 24 Jun 1826.Gilbreath and Eleanor ended up in Alabama…See More

Betty Jo - Did Phidelia outlive live Philip? If so, look for a copy of a will or probate record for Philip. If he named his wife, you can use either to prove the marriage. Land records are another potential source. Quite often they will state the…
