Cannot find them in the 71 or 81
As for the age, often people did not keep a track of thier ages. maybe one of the children took a guess, a marriage is more reliable as he would have been the one to give the information
hope this helps if only a little, As for Irish records I have never had a breakthrough there yet.

My dad hit a brick wall years ago and even now that he has passed away and i am carrying on the family tree i have been trying to break the wall down with no success. I have the death and mariage cerificate of
Hugh HARPER
Born 1 feb 1817
donegal Ireland
married Marjory/Margery FARREN/FERAN
28 Jan 1855 Port, Glasgow, Lanarkshire Scotland
Died 11 DEC 1883 Greenock Scotland.
His parents on the certificatesay
James HARPER and Mary Ann KELLY
Both born in IRELAND and Roman Catholic.
It also said that Hugh was married to a
Mary CALLAN first.
I cant find any info on her or his parents. I dont even know if he has brothers and sisters. Did the parents move to Greenock with Hugh since he was married in Greenock it could have been when he was a child.
There is something interesting on the death and marriage certificate. as he was born in 1817 in 1855 it registers as he was 37 which is correct. But on his death certificate registered 1883 it is saying he is /was 54 my calculation he should be 66yrs. Can anyone solved the error or is it just human error. This is my brick wall

Narelle, try looking for young William in baptism records, school admission records and hospital admission registers. Some relevant indexes are mentioned in 'Specialist Indexes in Australia: a genealogist's guide'. See www.judywebster.gil.com.au/si-98.html and www.judywebster.gil.com.au/si-06.html.

Yes, I did try NZ BDM and "Papers Past" Found the eldest sibling, Emma Jane had died in NZ in 1913.
The only William Gadsby's death recorded in NZ of that period was at Patea cemetery but when I ordered that certificate, his father was a Samuel Gadsby
from England.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.

have you tried NZ records, many of these people went to either NZ or WA, Queensland is another area.

Hi

Thanks for replying to my 'brick wall'. William Junior was still alive in 1868 when his youngest sibling, Arthur, was born.
When father William died in 1869 (killed in an accident), the crtificate listed 6 boys and 2 girls (no names) but there were 8 children born to William and Sophia in total.
I'm fairly sure his name appears on his mothers' death crtificate in 1903.

The inquest into a death at Mt Ararat in 1857 of a William Gadsby could be true if the date has been recorded incorrectly, as William was only born around1855/1856.
Thanks for the information on William senior enrolled to vote in 1856 elections.
I'll keep chipping away at my brick wall!

Scarlet I have also found William (father) on the Electoral Roll for 1856. He was listed as an Ascot (place) farmer and was a tennant for Mr Waldie. (still have not found son William)

for Scarlet, not sure where the post went?
I have found a couple of inquests
Digger - Inquest Index. Victoria 1840 - 1985

turns out the second fellow was 46 and was born London
you could get the birth certificate of one of the younger children, which where you may have found him!
have you got the parents deaths, this may say if he is still alive at the time of thier deaths, particulaly the mother if this is the fathers death above.
Ballarat is my area, I live in the district.
