John, I've been thinking a lot about this lately since I had a little "accident" of deleting 3 people and had some bad choices to make about how to handle this before it "synched" the mistake over to my online tree.  I am no expert (well that's obvious) but I'd be happy to discuss here or elsewhere.

Hi, I'm new here and apologise if I'm wanting to discuss an issue that is already being discussed here or elsewhere. I use Family Tree Maker synchronised with my tree on Ancestry.com. I have had a lot of problems with synchronisation failing and the fallout from that. I need to discuss what is good practice in preserving information to minimise the effects of failure and the work involved in getting things back together. There seems to me to be so many issues to discuss about this that another group or a new group might be more appropriate. Is there somewhere appropriate to get into in-depth discussion on this?

Re: "dit" French Canadian surnames in an Ancestry.com tree. I always include the "dit" in the family name field, for exampel Laurent BURQUE dit LALIBERTÉ, because one record could use one surnname and another record the other (or both). I have also seen children choose one or the other surname. There are many "dits" in my tree, and this hasn't caused any problems in Ancestry.com (aside from considering them to be a distict surname).

Ah, Judith, I wouldn't worry too much about copyright material as most things you would use on your tree for your ancestors would be public domain anyway.  Most things that are copyrighted material you find on the Internet would have a watermark on them anyway.  It's a judgement call you have to make yourself.  When in doubt, just don't use it.  I see nothing wrong in using drawings or paintings of old ships, flags, old postcards, etc.  Some websites have those things watermarked so in that case you would have to buy them to get a "clean" copy.   Nice link you included too.  Thanks.

yes you are right about copyright laws an all. So it does make it all the more difficult to find  and be able to use. Well maybe I'll just go through my clip art and try and use it to be on the safe side. But thanks anyway . I also just typed "Whatever" in and it came bace "The Mariners' Museum and they have a Genealogy Request site that you can ask what a certain ship looked like and can identify different types of vessels for you. so go to: www.marinersmuseum.org/library/genealogy-request   and chek out that too.  Judy

Dianne, good comment and it's a complicated subject.  I believe though if you are just using some images for your own personal use and not publishing them  in a public tree or anywhere else then it certainly is acceptable.  I should have added that along with my original message here.  Copyright laws are very complicated and it's a whole discussion in of itself.  I might add that after a certain period of time, images can be considered public domain, etc. 

I feel that someone's person photos are another matter altogether.  You should ask permission to use those and if you put those in your tree you should say from whom they originated.  Of course that also applies to printed matter, etc.

Believe it or not I didn' know how how to do that either Dianne thanks. I wondered about it too. Thanks I took a look see at the google search and wow!! look at all the ships.ow all we got to do is figure out which ship goes to the time period,hmmmmm. But thank you anyway I can't wait to try it.
