I have to admit that I don’t find the History Channel very interesting.

My husband watches it constantly and aside from something that occasionally catches my eye, I find most discussions of political, military and social history rather boring. I am horrible at remembering dates and while I can recount the presidents since I was born, prior to that, I don’t know my Adamses from my Tafts or even remotely where they fall in the historical timeline. It just doesn’t really interest me or capture my attention.

Now YOUR history, or your story, that’s a… Continue

Finding Your Family Online

In the news yesterday is a story about a couple who are engaged and planning to wed soon. What makes this story really unusual is that they have the same name, Kelly Hildebrandt, and they met on Facebook.

One night (female) Kelly was bored and typed her name into Facebook to see what came up. Up popped Kelly Hildebrandt but it was a guy and he was in Lubbock Texas. She sent him a note that said “Hi, We had the same name. Thought it was cool.” He “thought she was pretty cute” and on… Continue

Nathaniel Miguel Pryor of California

Although there is still some controversy, many genealogists now subscribe to the belief that my great-great-great grandfather, Nathaniel (Miguel Luis) Pryor (c. 1800-1850) was, indeed, the son of Nathaniel Pryor, a well-documented member of the famed expedition of William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, the first American overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back (1803-1806).

There have been numerous books written about the expedition, of course, and also one written specifically… Continue

Looking for Sandercocks

My main genealogical activity in the last couple of weeks has been chasing up our Sandercock - Saundercock families. I've just blogged about the earliest ancestors, William Sandercock and Mary Verran, with a picture of their tombstone in Cardinham churchyard in Cornwall, England, over on our main family history blog.

I started a new genealogy database file where I've tried… Continue

Family History Surprises - You Never Know What You'll Discover

When I first decided to start researching my family history in earnest, I was totally under the belief that I wouldn't get very far. My paternal grandparents were immigrants from Sicily, so I didn;t expect to get much on that side.

The only hope I had was on my mother's side. I knew my grandmother was born in 1895 in Colorado. I am still kicking myself for not realizing the significance of this and asking her questions before I lost her. Nevertheless, I set out to see what I could… Continue

Scaling the wrong brick wall

We've all been there I know, that ugly ole brick wall must have a billion head dents in it from where we have all hit our heads over and over, trying to push through, burrow under, climb over, whatever it took to get to the next level. Finding that one illusive puzzle piece that will unlock the secrets of the next generation back. The thrill of the chase, the incredible reward of looking at an old record, finding a letter in the back of a forgotten book, having a name leap out at you and take… Continue

I'm From A Small Town

I come from a small town. I like it that way.

My dad's parents moved here with him and my aunts when my dad was a toddler. Most of their relatives were still in Pennsylvania, except a couple of my grandma's siblings. They moved her mother up here a few years later, into the house that would later belong to my parents, where I was born. (Well, where I lived when I was born. I was born in a hospital.)

My mom's family, on the other hand, has lived in the same small nearby town for 150… Continue

Genealogy Research at the Spy Museum?????

Yearly, I make a trek to Washington, DC to do some family history research at the National Archives. On one trip, I decided to spend an afternoon visiting the new Spy Museum in D.C..

So, I'm walking around listening to the audiocassette, and I come to an area about terrorist attacks on American soil. The first display explained that 9/11 was NOT the first attack we've had on American soil. Rather, there was an attack during World War I which was also in the New York City area. There… Continue
