Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, 1847–1868

Here is a list of companies from LDS.org. I assume most of these came to Utah. I had never seen this database before. You can find the list at http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneercompanylist-alpha/0,15764,3967-1,00.html. It is a great resource and has the names of most of the Utah Pioneers.

Only just realised that my ancestor, along with many others, emigrated to Utah at the height of the Civil War. Makes me appreciate their bravery and fortitude at moving to a foreign land even more.

Watched BBC "Countryfile" last night - they were in Thornton Hough in Cheshire, the village where my Mormon Pioneer ancestor was born. Then this morning I went to my library, and there were two LDS elders, from Utah. Both ends of his journey, in less than 24 hours - what a coincidence!

My ancestor, Samuel Carter, sailed on the William Tapscott with his family, and was in the Henry Miller wagon train of 1862. I have information on them here: http://tinyurl.com/2vuql9m They settled in Springville, and I recently exchanged information with their descendants in Utah. I have found the Utah Sate family history site extremely useful - their death certificates have far more information on them than UK certificates, a boon to genealogists!

I made a 4-page handout for the class I taught at our local family history center last night on LDS (Mormon) Record Sources--what there is available and where to find them. If anyone is interested, I'll be glad to upload a copy.
