Hi Annelie

I have tried to get to see the church book AI - 8, page 92  but I can't.  Is it possible for you to tell me who is listed for the family at this time. I want to be sure I have all the children  I would really appreciate it.  I have found the family in an earlier church book.  Thank you in advance.

Does any one have access to the Bitterna Churchbook Husförhörslängd AI - 8, page 92 .  I cannot acces it, I can only get AI-5.

Thanks

Hello, I'm hoping to get a clue about my great-great grandmother. Her obituary says she was born Lovisa Larsdtr on 10 August 1845 and was married to L. Joneson in Sweden. They had 2 children, Sophie and Carl, and emigrated in 1869. Sophie died at sea. Mr. Joneson died before 1874. Lovisa then married my great-great grandfather, John Fredrick Johansson and they settled in Polk County, Wisconsin.  Both of these great-great grandparents are said to have been born in Mariestad, Stockholm??!!  I did find good records for JFJ in Djurö, Torsö, Skaraborg. Don't know where the Stockholm bit fits in. Perhaps Lovisa is not from Skaraborg, but rather Stockholm. Does anyone have any ideas about how to proceed? Thanks!

Ok, I think I've figured it out.  I found the church book on Ancestry but I only see upto to AI:5.

I believe I have just found the marraige of Anders and Johanna on 4th Feb 1855 . Very exciting.  Thank you

Lorraine: The Karte you refer to is short for the farm Kartegården. You find the family in Book Bitterna AI:8 page 92.

Annelie, thank you so much!  This must be him.

Knowing where Svante was born enabled me to check the SwedishCchurch Records 1500 - 1937 on anecestry.com (page 58, image 64 of 203)  I found Svante there, born 7th Nov 1858 to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johansdtr It shows the words Karty, is this a place name?  Are faddrarse godparents?  I have so much to learn!!

I believe I also found Alfred but born on 5th March 1865 to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johansdtr.

Again, now knowing the place of Bitterna, I searched on Ancestry in Births from the Swedish Death Index between 1947 and 2006. I found Karl Andersson Wernhoff born 28 Aug 1870.  I went back to the Swedish church Records for this date and found a Carl born 28 August to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johdtr.

What is interesting is that Karl Andrersson has the last name of Wernhoff and he died in Sweden and did not go to America as far as I know.  I also have a copy of the passenger list showing Svante Wernhoff   sailing on the Orlando from Goteborg to Hull, England.  So did they take on a permanent last name before it became law? but where did it come from - so  many questions, I wish I had a time machine!!!

I shall continue to look thorugh all the birth records for Bitterna to find the 3 daughters and 1 other son.  I shall also search the marriage records for Anders and Johanna marriage.

Once again, thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated.

Wernhoff is probably a taken name in US.
Found in the Emibas CD:
Svante Andersson B 7th Nov 1858 in Bitterna, Skaraborgs län, Emigrated 188314th July from Ullasjö, Älvsborgs län.
The only match with "Svante" "Date 7th Nov 1858" "born in Skaraborg".

/Annelie
