Thank you Jill for the invitation to join this group. I feel like a bit of an intruder though as my family don't come from Somerset originally.

Nice group though, will be interesting to watch.

My thanks in advance most of my research has lead me to the other side of the pond and Somerset, mostly Bridgewater on my Dads side emgrating to Canada in 1913, not 1912 as planned my great-grandmother was ill and their trip across was cancelled. Interested in any military information of UK .

My interest is in the Malet/Mallett family of Enmore and St. Audries, who were once an important family in the Taunton and Bridgewater areas for hundreds of years starting in the 12th century. The town of Shepton Mallet and the villages of Curry Mallet and Sutton Mallet were named after them. Other places associated with this family include West Quantockshead, Blue Anchor and Easton in Gordano.

Branches of this family (with variant spellings) settled in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Glamorgan (south Wales).

Thanks for the welcome!! I'm always looking for any information/connections regarding the following Somerset familes who are all connected through marriage; from mid-1700's onwards:

GARLAND: East/West Pennard/Ditcheat/Wraxall (and Michelmersh, Hampshire from 1870)
BOWN: West Cranmore/Ditcheat 1740+
BOND: Ditcheat 1740+
HIGGI(E)NS: Ditcheat 1750+
FISHER: West Cranmore 1760+
WAKE: South Barrow (still trying to find proof that my 5 x Gt GF married Sarah HOARE..)

Anyone with any connections..??

Cheers

Jill, I see that you mentioned NETHWAY, and I also see ROGERS mentioned. I have a marriage with very little information and wonder if you have any more information. Charles BEACHAM married Sarah NETHWAY at Yatton 8 Jan 1751. I think Sarah died in 1753 and was buried at Clevedon St Andrews. Maybe she died in childbirth??? I don't have her baptism. Maybe Hannah NETHWAY from Kenn, buried in Yatton 11 Jan 1730 was related to Sarah?? I think Charles is the first child of John BEACHAM and Susanna Avery, married at Yatton 7 May 1728, although I don't have a baptism listing. I think it is the same Charles Beacham that then married Sarah ROGERS (b June 1744, a twin along with Jane, in Kingston Seymore, to William ROGERS and Anne), married in Congresbury 1 Apr 1765.

I'd add the Bristol & Avon FHS http://www.bafhs.org.uk
and there are a couple of other very helpful societies at least (Fishponds Local History Society & Weston Super Mare FHS).

Hi everyone,
My name is Gaynor and I am conducting most of my research in the Somerset, Devon and South Wales areas. My main point of interest is Witham Friary, Gare Hill and Marston Biggott, all very small villages near to Frome, Somerset, also New Tredegar South Wales where my Somerset family emigrated to in the late 1900’s and Eastern in Gordano near to Bristol also Cardiff for my husbands side of the tree.
I have 11,450 individuals recorded on my tree, which includes my husband side. I have been tracing my roots for over 30 years, long before the internet.
My main names are HUES later to become HUGHES, HERRINGTON, SMITH, NEWBURY, LAPHAM, STEER, HISCOX and HOCKEY.
I am more than happy to share the information that I have and believe me I have a lot and more that happy to help people research their family even if I do not have a connection.
Best regards
Gaynor Steer nee Burdett

I've got a few other Somerset websites in my favourites folder which you might like to add to the list. The Somerset PR transcriptions seem to be all over the place and I've never been able to find a single consolidated source.

Hello Everyone I have just recently joined and i was born in Somerset. I am researching my dad's gdad's side of the tree i.e. my grandfather. My dad was born in the Falkland Islands, my grandfather was born in South Petherton he was Frank White, there is a large White family in South Petherton and i am sure we are probably all related going back. My grandfather was one of 13 if i remember correctly.Looking forward to hearing from any one out there. Yvonne
