I agree with David and we all paid good money for a product and expect it to deliver. They should fix bugs, agreed, but not release a version that has a feature you can't even access yet.

Family Search has pulled a fast one. BUT what good is my investment in Legacy if I can't run all its features?? Legacy should put pressure on the church or not included a restrictive feature. Both seem to have overlooked decentcy

Since it is FS and not Legacy which is restricting access to their data, shouldn't complaints about it be addressed to them?

Stephanie, a number of bugs have been corrected in 7.4.

Back when I first volunteered to work on the data base it was touted as a "good cause" for those of us interested in genealogy. There were no "points" or other restrictions. These have all been added as the data base has achieved some size. At the time, it was described as being a value to all of us.

I agree that both RayDean and Rick explained it all very well but I still see no point in releasing a version of Legacy at this time if that element is not available to the user. I think David makes a very good point in that he did a lot of work and cannot even view the fruits of his labors. I would be a very unhappy camper having not been told that all beforehand.

Unless someone can tell me what other advantages there are in this new download then I'll stick with the older version.

You described the problem very well. If it is available, why is anyone blocked? When I started transcribing or when I purchased Legacy I was not asked for my church number. That is when I should have been blocked - from volunteering. A church member that has not contributed to the project has full access!!

The FamilySearch site at www.familysearch.org is still available to everyone. Everyone can access Ancestral File, the IGI, etc. there, as has been the case for years.

There is also a "New FamilySearch" site at new.familysearch.org that consolidates several databases (Ancestral File, IGI, some Pedigree Resource File, etc.). This is the site that is currently only available to LDS Church members, though that will eventually change and the general public will have access to it.

Legacy 7.4 (and 7.5 when it's released) has features that interact with the New FamilySearch site. Since only LDS Church members can use New FamilySearch right now, that's why some people are "blocked" from having 7.4 interact with New FamilySearch. But Legacy 7.4 does NOT block anyone from accessing "regular" FamilySearch.

I hope that helps clarify things!

Stephanie this is a new part of familysearch.org which will open up all the material that has been posted. I will include all the family trees, IGI information etc. Right now its only available to their church members and a few helpers at the LDS libraries soon it will be open to everyone. Though not a church member I do have access as I help out at the library and assist their members. It will be a very good feature and you will be able to find matches from your tree etc. I have only spent a short time reviewing the feature and the tie in with Legacy but so far it looks very good. Hopefully later this year it will be open to everyone and could lead to some very good leads in our research. All we have to do is remain patient as its a very big endeavour for both Legacy and Family Search.

As I understand it, the access is currently limited to the old IGI (more or less) but with the improved search. It does not include the full transcripts which are being recorded.

I am, however, open to correction on this,

Could someone explain to me why anyone is blocked from FS on the new Legacy 7.4 when you can just go to the site directly and get any info you want for free and you don't have to be a member of the church?
