I think you are right on. All of us are very interested in genealogy - not selectively, but anywhere I can research it. I don't believe there are multiple data bases being maintained at FS. I do believe the old one needed a lot of work. I get the canned "thanks for all the work I am doing" on every contact. It would have been decent to include the volunteers. I also want access to all options of Legacy, Ancestry, etc or any other research tool I purchase.

Jen you are probably right that some of the complaints about the availability of nFS being overstated. That said, I think Legacy have made an error in the way this has been handled. They concentrated too much on this one major enhancement together with a 'few' bug fixes which has only pleased LDS members, leaving a lot of other folk, especially LDS tanscribers feeling dissapointed. It appears Legacy is a tool for the LDS members first and a commercial genealogy computer program second. If it continous on this path, I think some of the non LDS people will be switching to other programs.

pilot.familysearch.org is the direct address to the indexed records (takes you to the same place Patricia's directions do). I have to wonder, how many Legacy users really bought the program for the future linkup with NFS? I didn't. It seems to me it's a case of the glass half empty to the glass half full... You are not paying extra for a feature you are not using. You are getting a feature you may be able to use in the future for free... I understand the frustration at having to wait, and believe me, I was a bit put out when I found out I wouldn't be able to access the NFS when it was released for members, but I don't understand why people are fussing about Legacy being (better than) on the ball and having their software linkup before the release of the NFS to the public. I say, "Go Legacy!" I love Legacy, and after using several other gen programs, I think it's the best.

New Family Search does not have the records that have been indexed. Go to the home page of the old Family Search and click on the tab Search Records. Then go to Record Search pilot. It looks to me like anyone would be able to use this.

First many thanks to Donald for that new FS link. I had been using the old FS and gave your link a try. First shot I cam up with a birth certificate of a family I'm working on now. Great! Thanks a lot!

To RayDean--Thanks again for clarifying everything to all of us. It was nice of you to write it all up in detail.

I know this is a Legacy board, not a FamilySearch board, but hopefully this will clarify some of the confusion I'm seeing, as it relates to the release of Legacy 7.4. Sorry if it gets long; I want to be concise and thorough.

The LDS Church has many new projects underway. These new projects do not (for now) change the FamilySearch website at which the general public can access the IGI and other databases.

One new project is called New FamilySearch (NFS), with which Legacy 7.4 (and eventually 7.5) can interact. An important feature of NFS is the creation of a “common pedigree.” Mankind’s “common pedigree” is obviously not limited to LDS folks, but as the program is developed, LDS Church members are the “guinea pigs” until the program is ready for release to the public. This limited access is only temporary!

Right now, temporarily, since only LDS Church members can access NFS, LDS Church members are the only ones who can use 7.4/5's NFS interaction features. (Remember, all Legacy users benefit from 7.4's other update features!) BUT when the public gets access to NFS’s common pedigree, the interaction tools in 7.4/5 will work for everyone. Anyone who is “blocked” right now from using Legacy’s 7.4 / NFS interaction tools will not be blocked for long. (At least not according to software-development time reckoning!) And as an LDS Legacy user, I couldn’t get my hands on 7.4 fast enough! And 7.4 is barely tiding me over as I wait for 7.5! :)

Though these next FamilySearch projects don’t relate directly to Legacy, they have been addressed on this board, and need clarifying.

Another project, separate from the NFS common pedigree, is FamilySearch Indexing. Volunteers from around the world (not just LDS) download an image/page of a record and type out, or “index,” selected information. “Arbitrators” help with data-quality review. MANY THANKS to all who help with this great work!!! Keep it up, and please encourage others to participate.

Why should we Index? Because there is another new project in development called FamilySearch Record Search Pilot. This site allows the public to access, search, and view the results of Indexing work. Still in an early stage, Record Search has tremendous potential for researchers around the world. Nobody will be restricted from using the results of their indexing efforts.

I’m afraid perhaps the FamilySearch “umbrella” has caused confusion. The temporary limited access to NFS (and thus the temporary hold on Legacy 7.4's interaction features for everyone) should not be confused with unlimited, free access to the results of Indexing work. If you have questions about FamilySearch projects, please post a comment on my page or on the FamilySearch Enthusiasts group board.

Kudos to Legacy for making 7.4 with its NFS interaction tools available! Please hurry with 7.5 so I can sync!

For those of you who might not be aware of its existence, much new information is available from: http://familysearchlabs.org/
I've been using its resource for well over a year, having added much new information to my family records.

Stephanie, My comment to David was to be my last on this topic, but this one will be. As I explained earlier there are two parts to the Family Search addition, one of which is for LDS only, so you will never be able to access that bit. It is up to Family Search who, and when, they allow to access their data.

WOW! I can not believe people are so upset that a future feature is included in a FREE upgrade to a program that costs under $50 US (and can be used for FREE in Standard Version). It is crazy! Most programs upgrade every few YEARS - Legacy - every few months! Most programs charge for every upgrade - Legacy - very rarely! LDS allows non-members into their database and it costs them to maintain the system to do so. Have you all gone a bit overboard here!?!?!?

David, we must agree to disagree, I did know that the FS program would be rolled out slowly, even the LDS bit has only gradually been released from area to area in the States. Legacy has always been open about this upgrade not giving access to the nFS, and I was aware of all of this before I started to transcribe for FS.

I have no problem with LDS members having access to tools for their purposes, after all I will never use them. I am also prepared to wait for the full public release by FS. I still consider that any complaints should be made to them, after all this problem exists for all companies which are making the direct link available, and I don't think one can blame them for keeping up to date with what ever facilities are available - even if limited.
