The Family History Centers have access to order most microfilm from the Family History Library Catalog ( These microfilms can be film taken of original records, transcripts, abstracts. It can take several weeks for a film to be ordered and send to the Family History Center. I would suggest making an appointment, or just going in during their open hours and visiting with the research consultants there. They will be able to help you order films that will further your research.

I've never been to a LDS Family History Center. I've found a few listing on their website. If I want more information on those listings (I assume they are microfilms), what information should I bring with me when I visit the local center? Do I bring a printout of what I've obtained? Do they then actually provide me with an actual copy of the document (marriage license, birth certificate, etc.)?

Hi Lisa, FamilySearch is made up of several databases. Do you know which your results are in? IGI, Ancestral File, etc.?

Does anyone know, is there any more info to be had on familysearch results that are member submitted and is there any access to these records?

I prefer overy Ancestry. Course I could just be biased since my grandfather is one of the professional genealogists on it. *lol* Im not LDS but everyone on my mom's side is.

John, my son (one of four), is living as a resident in New Zealand; he works for the television station in Auckland. I was just wondering how many of you have done any of the indexing for FamilySearch? I did a little, then life got the best of me and I dropped out. It was a really good exercise though and someday I will get back into it. Like I tell my classes, it's a contribution that we can make and unlike housework, it will last forever.

Hi Christy and all,
I have just joined and I am hopeful that I can learn quite a bit. I live in Tasmania, Australia.

I joined this group because I need to remember that my focus should be on my family; I tend to get distracted by every new site that comes along! I also help others with their genealogy and forget to tell them about the great resources of the Family History Library, FamilySearch, etc. Can you imagine that?

I'm so glad to see you all joining! I've done quite a bit of LDS, and particularly early LDS research. I hope I can help anyone with questions. And I'm sure you all can help me as well.
