I agree about the weaknesses of bad transcriptions and poor search results, but I have found a great deal of new information through this service. On balance, I consider it worthwhile. One should always check the original records to verify transcriptions. And the census enumerators made at least as many errors as the transcribers. Often the transcription is correct, but the original is wrong. Verify and double-check. It's not going to simply be handed to us.

I do not understand, however, how the search system works. It appears that the more specific information you enter, the less the results fit the criteria. It makes me wonder whether they are trying to convince us about how many records they can throw up rather than narrowing the search down to what we are looking for.

I use Ancestry because it has the most info, but I don't much like it. Their transcriptions contain a lot of misspellings, and when you're looking for something, you have to go through a lot of stuff you don't want in order to maybe find stuff that you do. If you know somone died in 1912, and put that in your info, they don't care. You still get stuff from the 1920 and 1930 censuses, but like I said, they have the most info.

I agree the "new" Ancestry set-up is very confusing and frustrating to
even figure out what you are looking at. The old one took long enough
to figure out...lol

I DO NOT like to the new Ancestry.Com make over. I'm thinking about canceling my membership too. Ancestry needs to rethink what they have done.

Sherry, I agree with you. I was perfectly happy with the way Ancestry.com was before they "fixed" it. I have been a subscriber for years and am thinking about cancelling it now.

I HATE the new ancestry.com make over. Why they "fixed" something that wasn't broke is beyond me but I am seriously considering canceling my membership. The level of frustration trying to get around within the system now, is NOT worth the "beneifit" they offer.

Seriously...I HATE>>>HATE>>>HATE IT!

Hi Kevin-
Have you found your Ryans on census records, military or death records? Ancestry has a good collection of death record information.
