The selection of sources becomes more critical as more are records are preserved and made available online and at archives. In a private survey of several thousand researchers, the most common question was “how do I know which record to search?”
A key component for FamilyLink and GenealogyWise will be piggybacking with the world’s largest listing of original historical sources of genealogical value, namely the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). Happily the FHLC has always been free to use, and has been online for a decade.
As announced on 14 May 2009 by FamilySearch.org, GenSeek could help lead researchers to the “quickest results”. Not necessarily the “best” sources. And users will more quickly wonder “now what do I do?” The professional catalogers of the FHLC have created a remarkable bibliographic tool in light of the numerous countries and record types represented in the 2.4 million microfilm rolls and 727,000 microfiche and 356,000 books. Now the FamilyLink family aims to allow users to annotate the FHLC.
Q. Who will support a Union Catalog of historical collections and genealogical sources, a worldwide index to genealogical projects and indexes and databases?
