What am I doing wrong?

Hello,
Knislinge: no birth records before 1851, no household before 1861
Hjarsas: no birth before 1898, no household before 1861

I suspect that "Rutting" could have been the soldier name which the father may have kept as many did. You might try checking into the Swedish military records which I am not too familiar with. If you have the book, Cradled in Sweden- it will be of help there, or maybe someone else here works with those records.

I will try to go thru some early household records for a clue. Do you know the names of any siblings to these two people or a mother's name?

Thanks for the help. I believe Nils Nilsson's mother was Hanna Nilsdotter born 14 April 1807 at Roalöf, Färlöv sn, Kristianstad, Sweden, I believe Nils Nilsson's father was Nils Nilsson (Sr. or den Aldre) born at Hjarsas in 1794; but these are not confirmed. The John Rutting Census reference is all I have for Anna.

Yes, I see what you mean. A list of all the church books in the Family History Library catalog shows very little

before 1861 and no birth records at all in Hjäsås socken. Since these microfilm copies of the original records were

probably the basis for SVAR and Genline databases. I did not see what "history" category contained but some understanding of what happened may be helpful. You may want to try to make contact with researchers who have researched in this area for suggestions. Try making contact thru DIS. English should work fine.
