Yes, this is the right family. No, John MacDonald lives in Scotland. If you email me at jdengel39@yahoo.com we can email direct and I can give you John's email address too, since he is actually the one that is related to you.

Hi Linda,

John MacDonald formerly of Gills-Canisby, Caithness, Scotland and I are trying to locate descendants of his great grandmother Alexanderine MacKay Matheson. Your name came up during our search. Alexanderine's sons were William Matheson (born 1890 in Dickinson County, Kansas), and John's grandfather John MacDonald born in 1881 in Watten, Caithness, Scotland. Alexanderine, her husband John, sons William Matheson and John MacDonald ended up living in Gills-Canisby, Caithness, Scotland by 1901. My great great grandfather John McDonald of Watten, was the father of John MacDonald and my great grandfather Chauncy Bert McDonald (born in Missouri around 1881 or 1882). I am trying to figure out who Chauncy Bert's mother was (been looking for about 8 years now). I was wondering if you are a descendant of William Matheson? I am hoping to find a family member who might have an old family bible where Alexanderine may have listed her children's names, and dates of birth. I think that she might also be Chauncy's mother too. Any help that you may be able to give me with this, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joy Gantt Engel

The wife of James Rosie, Sr. is Syliva Vikman. Although strictly speaking he isn't James Rosie Sr but James Sutherland Rosie and James Jr is really  James Arthur Rosie

Sylvia Sutherland? The only Sylvias I know of in my whole family tree are my mother and my neice.

My mother Sylvia Rosie was Karin Sylviia Olivia Vikman and my neice, my half sister Evelyn's daughter, is Sylvia See.

Hej Linda!

I only have one picture of my grandmother Elizabeth Innes and her brother James Sutherland c 1910 I suppose. I would love to have other pictures that could be the Mathesons.

So yes there were a James Sutherland Sr. and Jr.. Elizabeth Matheson died in 1913 in Lanark, James Sr died in Edinburgh in 1924 and James Jr married Margaret Leithead in 1925 and died in 1958.

my email is marosie@shaw.ca

Do you know anything about William and Elizabeth's brother John? I know he married an Alexina Mckay in Dickinson County in 1888 and moved back to Scotland around 1891 but am having trouble finding anything out about him or his future wife while they were in America. I believe Alexina was supposed to marry the father of her son John McDonald in the US but for some reason ended up marrying John Matheson instead. All of them were still in Scotland for the 1881 census.

I am working with a couple of people to try and prove or disprove that a John H McDonald b c 1862 and lived here in Montana, Colorado and finally California is the same person.

He worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, One of the people I am workng with wondered if the Matheson's were friends.

I see you have a Bartle. I have a Bartles. Also spelled Bartel or Bartels. The immigrants were a sister Augusta who married a Kleffman in York PA, a brothers Charles, Frederick and Henry. They came to PA in the late 1850's. These names ring a bell?

I found George Page's inventory of property at death and I know where Mann Page's will is located. I will be looking at his will soon along with any other Page that could be connected and possibly be Geroge Page's father.

My Mathesons are from Caithness and Sutherlandshire. Gils Canisby has the Caithness "farm" still owned by my Matheson cousins. Orkney View is the house on the cliff in Portsherra, Sutherlandshire. The town is full of Mackay's which is the maiden name of my great grandmother Matheson. I have been in both houses. William Matheson is my great great grandfather
