Spring Place Cemetery

It was a nice day today, so I made a visit to Spring Place Cemetery. It
had been many, many years since I had been to this cemetery. I was
searching for four headstones, in particular, but had hopes of finding
a few more that might belong to my ancestors. I spent about an hour
there and wandered over the whole cemetery. . .

Healys and Crosbys from Massachusetts to Chebogue, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

From Cape Code to Nova Scotia to Beverly, Massachusetts

My ancestor Joseph Edwin Healey arrived in Massachusetts from Nova Scotia sometime between his marriage in 1848 and the birth of his first child in Beverly, in 1852. I’m not sure if he arrived on a boat, but being a mariner, he probably sailed to his new home with his new bride. He is listed as a sailor or mariner on his children’s birth records in Beverly, and as a fisherman on the… Continue

The Christiana Resistance Precursor to the Civil War - Christiana Pennsylvania

The Christiana Resistance thought of in some corners as a precursor to the Civil War. It is one of the many events in American History that is not widely known.

"A major episode in African-American history, along with John Brown’s raid, was the Fugitive Slave Rebellion in Christiana. This event was a harbinger of the Civil War. Frederick Douglas referred to the Christiana Riot as “… the battle for liberty.”

On September 11, 1851, Slave owner Edward Gorsuch, his son… Continue

The Missing Generation – Clementius Swearingen Jack

One of the large errors from Matohe is a missing generation. This is really unfortunate, because it directly impacts the author’s line. It is however an easy mistake to make, because Clem Jack was really the missing son and it took a lot of piecing things together to figure out that he existed.

Clementius Swearingen Jack was the eldest son of John Jack and Lucy Smith, his exact birth date is unknown. He married a woman named Mary Elizabeth and had two children, John and George… Continue

Setting the Record Straight: "Matohe – A Labour of Love" and Jack genealogy

A book was published in 1988 chronicling the genealogy of several Bath County Virginia families including the Jack line. This was the first and thus far only record the Bath county Jacks published and is used by Jack researchers around the country and the trees from it are published on various genealogy websites for researchers. Unfortunately, with all apologies to Cathy Smoot Carson, it is also wrong.

Matohe - A Labour of Love traces the Bath County Jacks back to a German… Continue

My Introduction

I posted this on the Introduction Forum and decided to copy and place as my first blog so I can easily find it later.

I'm Margaret Ann from Tennessee. I have been researching my elusive family since 1983. I really appreciate having U.S. census records at my finger tips 24/7 as when I started I had to go to the public library and they certainly didn't have all the census records available on microfilm either, much less an index. The 1910 census was available and I still remember the… Continue

Little Jessie G. Parrish

There has always been a story told over and over again by my mother and grandmother. I doubt it was told to us as a warning regarding the dangers of playing near railroad tracks - we never lived near railroad tracks. I think perhaps it was probably one of the most devastating family events, so it was a story that was retold over and over to preserve the memory of this little boy as best as possible?

Oddly enough, before I began… Continue
