Glad to find anyone related to the line. I have one contact in Salt Lake City who is trying to help me work on this (unless you are her!). I didn't check your e-mail address. She is also from the James S. Cowan line. I am hunting for Andrew…

Hi, I am new to this site. I have been trying to compile a family history to make a book. I am descended from Robert Cowan and Nancy Ann Rutledge and have been so frustrated with the brick wall that I hit when trying to uncover Robert's…

Do you have a link? I have ancestors from Augusta County, VA. The family moved to North Carolina, then Kentucky, and finally to Tennessee. I also have many other Tennessee ancestors who were originally from North Carolina or Virginia.

Line Changes in Tennesee

Just a suggestion from my own research. My ancestor said he was born in NC but NC was Va (it covered a lot of territory), then NC, State of Franklin, Watagua Association (some records maintained in NC), and then Tennessee. This is 1744 era. I am finding that he really didn't move around much, it just looks like it. If you have been researching a long time, you probably know this but even the Ohio Territory can get involved prior to Tennessee. Takes a lot of digging in a lot of counties/states…See More

Just a possibility, check Caukley's volumes. They list abstracts of wills which give page numbers and books. When was the county formed? Its possible if it was formed after 1822, that the will is located in another county..you say it was proven…

Oh yes. STL has death and birth records early on. They are available through the Missouri State Archives or the STL Gen. Society on microfilm. A request to the Missouri State Archives can be made for a search via the sos website: sos.mo.gov.

Donna:
Hoping you'll provide us more information about Joseph and Keziah (______) Abbott and their children so that we can do a better job of helping find evidence about Keziah's maiden name or birth town/county location.
The first place I thought to check for additional information were marriage and death records of her children, but I don't feel I know them well enough yet to do the research justice.
A few cursory items here that I’ll also post to your query.
The 1850 census mentions five apparent children (six if you presume also Elisha Abbott, one door down); however, if the Joseph Abbott located at Smyth County, Virginia in the U.S. Census of 1840 is "our" Joseph, that household (attached) reported 10 apparent children then residing there.
A FGS would be really helpful.
Earlier you wrote, "Their daughter was married @ 1840 in Smythe County, Va and then they came to Missouri." Appears also the youngest child reported in the 1850 census was born at Virginia. She was age 9, suggesting Joseph and Keziah left Virginia sometime after 1841. Of the children in the 1850 census, the eldest reported born at Virginia was William, ae 14. Children Anna and Rachel were also, at 1850, reported born at Virginia. Finding evidence of where in Virginia the children were born (their marriage records, their death records, sometimes their children’s birth/marriage/death records) would help us narrow the record groups to search for yet other information about Joseph and Keziah.
Still working from the 1850 census, the older children, Benjamin and Elisha appear born at North Carolina. As with the children born at Virginia, locating where in North Carolina those children were born would similarly help to identify which North Carolina record groups provide the best opportunity to learn more about the family.
Finally, you wrote, “The marriage date for Joseph and Keziah probably isn't correct….” I’m couldn’t find that you had provided us with a marriage date for Joseph and Keziah; however, if the 1840 census attached is “our” Joseph Abbott, the eldest child in that household appears a female, ae 15-20. Lacking other information and assuming that female was a child of Joseph and/or Keziah, then at least one of them probably married 1820-1825.
So hope you’ll post a FGS. In a pinch, assuming Noah Abbott’s book documented Joseph and Keziah's children, might you be able to compile a FGS from that detail and attach same to this query?
Thank you for whatever assistance you are able to provide. --GJ

Hi Donna from Missouri!
Welcome to Most Wanted! I'm looking at your challenge now. Do you really want all three in one posting? Unless they closely connect, you might have more success with three separate postings. Will you think about it?
As the current replies all related to the first item (it think), Keziah (I always thought that was such a fine name), you could ADD a Most Wanted discussion for each of the other two challenges and then EDIT your current (original) discussion to delete the last two paragraphs or that challenge (or replace the last to paragraphs with a comment that links to the other two challenges).
Let me know what you think. I'll work on dear Keziah until I hear back from you.
Thank you again for supporting Most Wanted. --GJ

P.S. Have you develoeped a FGS-level timeline for Joseph and Keziah (_____) Abbott? If you have a research log about her, it might help focus first on areas you _haven't exhausted.
