I have come across a situation that I had not seen before.  I have a widows pension for Edward Cortes who fought in the 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry, Company G.  This unit fought for the Union.  The widow Roca Gentry applied for a pension with the state of Texas and received it in the 1920's.

Was this common?  I had assumed that the former Confederate states paid Confederate pensions while Washington paid Union pensions.  Did other Confederate states pay pensions to units or soldiers who fought for the Union?
