Union pension paid by a southern state
I have come across a situation that I had not seen before. I have a widows pension for Edward Cortes who fought in the 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry, Company G. This unit fought for the Union. The widow Roca Gentry applied for a pension with the state of Texas and received it in the 1920's. Was this common? I had assumed that the former Confederate states paid Confederate pensions while Washington paid Union pensions.
