I neglected to leave the common name used in the US. Ole B. Nelson
Mary,
Your Ola you said was born in Genarp. Was that Genarp associated with Genarp saw mill north of Söderhamn in Helsingland?
My grandfather had a friend in Genarp in 1905.
Lynn I wish I had an answer for you. All I know is he was born in Genarp. He imigrated in 1890. His wife was also from Genarp.
Mary!

Please tell me his wifes name. And if you can her birthdata.

There is a Genarp just outside Lund in southern Sweden.
I think I found your Ola, but there is some problem with his birthday and his parents name and so on.
I am not sure about this. I am interested in a person of Swedish origin whose (patronym?) was Nilsson. Am I in the right folder? Johan Alfred (Alfrid?) Nilsson born abt 1877 in Sweden. Don't know where. Emigrated to America to Massachusetts about 1895-6. Wife's first name Amanda. I went to a Swedish census site--don't speak or read Swedish, and found it was a common enough name, if only I knew where he came from. I think a key is that his family was Catholic, not so usual in Sweden. His occupation in America was blacksmith. Amanda was born in Sweden 1873 came 1893-5 I don't know if they married in Mass. or in Sweden about 1897. My guess is in Massachusetts perhaps Cambridge but there are other Nilssons there at time so not sure if they fit. They named their first son b. in Cambridge, Mass Henning William Nelson. I found a passenger list with an Amanda Nelson and son Henning, returning from Sweden-mixed up the citizenship, but she said she had been in Gothenburg, but I understand that is a major port, like New York so maybe not origin. Any suggestions on how to narrow down search?
In the CD Emibas I found:

Nilsson, Johan Alfred
B. 4 Jan 1877 i Flistad, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland)
Emigrated 27/4 1895 from Skattegården, Flistad, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland) to Amerika

Nilsson, Johan Alfred
B. 20/1 1877 i Västra Ämtervik, Värmlands län (Värmland)
Emigrated 29/4 1890 from Liane, Västra Ämtervik, Värmlands län (Värmland) tol Amerika

Nilsson, Johan Alfred
f. 5/3 1877 i Trökörna, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland)
Emigrated 14/5 1897 from Årås, Trökörna, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland) to Amerika

Which one of those can be the one you looking for?

Hi Annelie J
Wow! Thank you for such a fast response to my inquiry. I do not know which of the three,. Probably not the 1890 but that leaves two, 1895 and 1897. 1897 would be closer to being older to be on one's own, with a good trade skill. So that would be Vastergotland, "Greater Gotland"? I've got to check a map of Sweden.
Västergötland is a landscape of Sweden. Not so much in use today.
Annelie: Thank you for the clue that the old areas were called "landskaps". I looked up Vastergotland, and see that it was 6 square km or about 2.5 square miles in area, and also bordered on some of the other places you had suggested. That's not a very great distance by walking or horseback, so perhaps there is some connection, a local hero or a common ancester.
I need to make a small correction here.

Västergötland is a province (landskap) in Sweden. It has no administrational importance but provinces are is still in use today.
The Swedes indentify themselves accordingly to the provinces. I am for example a Skåning. I am from the province of Skåne (Scania).

And Västergotland is not 2.5 square miles. It is actually almost 6439 square miles!
