Hi, I am trying to find the birthplace of robert Shueard. We believe he was born in 1813 in England. He came to South australia in 1838 aboard the Siren from Hobart.
He may have been the convict no.1198 Robert Seward who was convicted at The Norfolk epiphany assizes in 1830 and transported to Tasmania. However, there are doubts about this, most notably the description in convict records which said he was 5'7" tall whereas he was known as being over 6' tall in S.A, and his progeny were all very large people. There is also a record of a Robert Seward dying in 1890 in the Newtown Charitable Institution, although that man was recorded as being 66 y.o, whereas our ancestor was 77 in 1890.
WE have been unable to find any Robert Shueard (Shuard or Seward) born in UK about 1813 using a subscription in Ancestry.
I have also checked the UK census to see if there were any family of the right age and came across people who were born in Spetchley . However, checking the Mormons microfilm of that town did not reveal any males born around 1813..
Can anyone suggest any other avenues to investigate.
Hi Ross
A bit late but done a bit of fishing and put it on a word doc for you to look at

Hi Wayne,
Thank you very much for your efforts.
There are 4 or more of us who have been researching the Shueards/Stacey for over 20 years. We have the Book-Toilers of the hills and have visited "Bushlands, and theShueard property. There is a mistake in "Toilers", it was Mary who arrived on "Trusty". Robert was on "Syren" or most probably "Siren". I thought at one stage he was born in Germany and put that on a Family tree on the IGI site. It is an error but I can't delete it. Robert Senr. was charged with theft of an ox together with some known convicts from Tasmania, this is what lead us to believe he may have been the convict robert Seward no 1198 in Tasmania. Unfortunatley there is no proof of this and the description of the convict at 18 yo is 5''7" tall whereas we know he was well over 6' tall.
Our Brickwall is his birth. Family stories are that he was from Kent and that his nick name was Black Bob, a convict. The birth of Robert Seward, the convict has not been found either.--Are the one and the same?
Spelling of his name changed between 1848 and 1870 from Shuard to Shueard-maybe trying to distance from his past?
The discrepancy of 10 years on his marriage is that he registered his marriage in 1848, whereas they had been living together as man and wife since 1838.
The birth and pre 1838 history of Robert Shueard are a big ongoing mystery, and of course our biggest Brickwall.
Hi, I'm researching a potential link to Tasmania and am hoping someone might be able to do a TAS BDM lookup for me, please. Margaret/Maggie THOMAS, an Aboriginal girl born in about 1815. Lived in the Launceston area. Was living with William PATTEN and his wife (name unknown). Margaret THOMAS was said to be pregnant at the age of 16 in 1831. I'm looking for births, deaths and marriages on both the THOMAS and PATTEN lines, especially a potential link seeing Margaret THOMAS marrying or partnering a member of the PATTEN family.

Thanks,
John

Hi John, I am not sure if this is any help to you
DALRYMPLE, DOLLY (c.1808-1864), Aboriginal matriarch, was born in the Furneaux Islands in Bass Strait, daughter of George Briggs, a sealer from Bedfordshire, England, and Woretemoeteyenner (also known as Pung or Margaret), who was the daughter of Mannarlargenna, a chieftain from the north-east of Van Diemen's Land. One of two Aboriginal women abducted by Briggs, she bore him three children before he sold her to another sealer John Thomas for a guinea.
