Did your Ancestors go to College?

We were recently sitting around the Easter dinner table discussing tuition, college and relishing the fact that we will no longer be paying tuition, since our daughter graduates with her Master’s Degree a few weeks from now.

My mom stated that she paid $110.00 for all…

Daniel with Nick Barratt, author and WDYTYA? genealogical consultant

I haven’t yet finished going over all the material I brought from the Who Do You Think You Are? Live event in London, but wanted to let everyone know about my recent trip. It was really a dream come true in every aspect.

Considered the major genealogy event in Europe, it was important for me to attend the London show - not only as the…

ORPHAN PHOTOS

Memorable Family Treasures

One of the nicest gifts that our families can leave us is pictures of themselves, places they have been and other family members, such as group photos. Sometimes all three are in one photograph.

How many pictures do you possess that do not have a name, date or a place written on the back of the photo? If your family is like my family, you probably have quite a few. I inherited a boxful of such pictures. Some of the faces are familiar, some I… Continue

Writing a Family Biography (Part 2)- A Handy Template

A Family Biography Template

Many people shy away from including too much writing in their family history books, assuming it takes some special talent. Often this results in a quick rendition of the facts of a person's life, born, worked, married, died. Not exactly creative.

Below I have prepared a simple template anyone can use to write a creative biography about an ancestor or a living relative. This template provides an added element, a family element. This tool will help you… Continue

Family Biography - A Lesson in Writing

Part 1- Preparing to Write a Family BiographyThis week I have been crazy busy writing family biographies. Three years ago, I began researching and writing the Kowalsky Family History Book. (I may have mentioned it once or twice before) From this process, I have learned a great deal about writing a family biography.

A biography is a life story written by someone other than the subject. A family biography is a bit different. It features more people, all related in some way. It… Continue

Preserving Your Family History- The Best Options

Many family historians spend their entire lives collecting documents, pictures and stories of their ancestors. Their project usually starts out as a keen interest in whom they are and where they come from. The journey becomes not only about acquiring the proof of their ancestors existence but it also becomes a journey of personal self-discovery. For this, the proof that exists in the documents, photos and stories that they acquire become very valuable to them. Here lies the problem. This… Continue

Other Collections for Finding Family Stories Online

The holidays really have me thinking about family stories. With relatives packing the house, there are bound to be a few memories stirred and shared, and these always leave me wanting more. So of course, I turn to the internet, and a few more websites that are making an effort to collect personal memories, and other family history treasures.

Internet Archives - audio, video, texts & more!

It’s Christmas eve day, and its snowing here in Dallas, so everyone is just huddled indoors trying to stay warm, and enjoying being in the company of family... which always sets me to thinking about my ancestors and genealogy, of course.

Since the presents are all wrapped, and its just a countdown to Santa, I’ll go ahead and write about another site for finding family stories online, and we’ll call it my Christmas present to you :)

WorldCat and Online Special Collections

Every third Thursday I give a presentation in SecondLife. December’s discussion was part two of Finding Your Family Stories Online, with an emphasis on using Special Collections that are available online. While last month’s topic focused on digitized texts, part two focused on finding all sorts of other treasures – photographs, letters, oral histories, sound recordings, videos... the kinds of things that can add color… Continue

A Lesson in Writing a Narrative Family History

If you are ready to start writing your family history book but not sure how to turn your research into an interesting life story then I have some tips to get you started. How do you write a descriptive, creative, narrative story about your relatives when all you have is a list of dry facts and documents to draw on? How do you turn your facts into a story about an individual you never met?

Believe or not before you begin writing your family history, I am going to suggest more… Continue

How to Determine the Size and Scope of Your Family History Book

Last week I posted about getting your genealogy research organized so that you can get ready to start writing your family history book. By organizing your information, you should now have a better knowledge of what you have in your arsenal to create your book.

The size of your family history book can vary. It may be a small booklet of a dozen photocopied pages but together in project folder to a large 200-page full colour coffee table style book. Only you can decide which challenge you are… Continue

The Value of Visual Storytelling Through Video Biographies

Last week the American Chronicle published a beautiful article about what it is we do here at Legacy Multimedia.

While it’s always great to get PR, I particularly like this article because I felt that writer Pam Vetter asked the right questions and framed all the responses into a context that really gets to the essence of what it is that we do.

Because the process of creating a video… Continue

Defining Today's Family

This week, I read an article in the latest issue of NGS Magazine entitled What is a Family? by Harold E. Hinds Jr. The subject of this article was based on his Grandmother’s two bibles. These two bibles outlined two very different concepts of his family. Like many families, there were sometimes aspects of our ancestor’s lives that were considered in appropriate and so some of our relatives took it upon themselves to rewrite their families’ history.

Today, we have a different… Continue

Days With My Father by Philip Toledano

My son recently sent me a link to a beautiful website called “Days With My Father.” It is a beautiful and sentimental photo gallery done by a professional photographer with his writings about dealing with the final stages of his father’s Alzheimers Disease.

As someone whose work it is to preserve memories, I found this a beautiful and touching memorial. I sent it out to several of my friends who sent me back emails thanking me for sharing the link and how much they really appreciated… Continue

2009 Association of Personal Historians Conference in Valley Forge

If you follow me on any of the social media platforms such as Twitter (@stefanitwyford) or Facebook, you’ll know that I spent the previous week at the 2009 Association of Personal Historians Conference in Valley Forge Pennsylvania.

Having never been to the Philadelphia area, I was particularly excited to be spending time at Valley Forge, the historic site of the American Revolution and birthplace of everything we now take for granted as being intrinsically American. I was not… Continue

Home videos donated to film project

From the www.miamiherald.com:

Isabel Ramos-Quinones' father shot home movies of family parties -- childhood memories that are now beginning to decay.

But she found out a way to preserve the old film, now tucked away in her closet.

An added bonus: She will be helping document history.
