I ordered it directly from them on-line. They did give me a order number. I'll have to check that out and see how they're coming along. There was a place on there that said "My Order Status" so I'll check that out today. It has only been a week since I ordered it, but perhaps they have started. This is exciting and I've never done this before.
Thanks!

Mary....I might have been lucky with mine. My gr grandfather's only took 3 wks. to get.I've heard stories of it taking up to 6 wks to get. If you sent for the records you should get a card from them.Once you get it you can trace the progress of them tracking it down.( It kinda eases the pain of waiting...lol)

Regarding Pension Records from NARA. You should be really happy with the records you receive. One thing to mention though--if there was no dispute over the pension file you will just get normal information. If the records were disputed, you will get a lot more information because there would be a lot of back and forth correspondence to justify the pension. Valuable information!

If you can get to D.C. and NARA, it really gives you an awesome feeling to be able to actually touch and read the original files.

Mary....I was very pleased with the CW and Pension records I got for my gr grandfather. It was a world of info on him including court documents, doctors reports and statements from ex wives.
As for the CW records. they are complete on him. From his volunteer enlistment papers to anything else involving his military time.

It seems I can't put the URL for "Life During The Civil War" but if you do a search for History Magazine's "Life During The Civil War" and you'll find it.

I gain no $$ from this. I just think it might be an interesting softbound book to have.

Coming in October 2009...

Life During the Civil War

Written by author David A. Norris, History Magazine's “Life During The Civil War” looks beyond the major battles and famous generals of the Civil War. In-depth and informative articles examine what Americans of the 1860s saw, heard and felt, while serving in the army or navy, or while enduring the social changes of life on the home front during the war years. From these articles that highlight large and small aspects of everyday life, the reader will gain a better understanding of how average Americans experienced the Civil War, a central event of the nation's history.

This will be a limited-run, 96-page soft-bound special edition celebrating History Magazine's 10th-Year anniversary**. Order your copy now for just $9.95 + $4.50 shipping.

For the first time I ordered the complete pension recordsfrom the National Arhcives on my gr gr grandfather, Andrew S. Davis just last week. He joined in 1861 at the age of 40, was promoted to full Corporal (what does that exactly mean?) and mustered out in 1865 after the Grand Army March in Washington DC. The family knows nothing of him before his enlistment. We can track him in Iowa where he married a widow the following year in 1866. Census recoreds way he was born in Pensylvania. But what did he do before? Was he married before? What are the names of his parents? Did he have any siblings?

I'm hoping someone can tell me if they were happy with the information you received from ordering the files from the National Archives. I need to be patient now and just wait for them.

Those with Pennsylvania ancestors who served in the Civil War may want to check the Civil War Veterans' Card File of the Pennsylvania State Archives available online: http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/.
