Hi Julie, I saw your post to the NC Genelogical Sources page back in October about Sydney Thompson. Can you tell me when and in what county he was born? Also, do you have a name for a spouse? Feel free to email me at grs3275 at yahoo dot com. I did find a couple of NC death certificates that match your guy.

Hello all.

I'm new to the site and hopefully I will learn a lot from you guys. I was raised in N.C and most of my research is in NC. I currently live in MD. Can someone recommend some websites besides Ancestry that I can use to fill in these missing holes.

For example, I have a few relatives that I can't find a death certificate for and these are relatives that died after 1920. What gives? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Julie,

I would try contacting both county and state. My mother for years tried at the county level to get a copy of her birth certificiate and it couldn't be found. When she contacted the state they were able to find it right off. The midwife had misspelled the surname (Nosch instead of Hosch) on the birth certificate. I think the difference in being able to locate was how it was filed at the state level vs. the county level, so definitely check both places.

Julie,
Have you contacted the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Raleigh or the county seat of Cherokee County? I wish you luck with this brick wall.

Joyce,
Thank you for the suggestions. My grandmother, my father and I visited Sidney's grave. His headstone was either replaced or installed much later than his death. My grandmother was his granddaughter and she remembered when he died. She said it was around 1938 but his tombstone shows the death date as 1963. I have tried to contact Mt. Zion to ask who may have had that installed but haven't been able to get in touch with them. I'll continue to try.
Thanks again.
Julie

To Julie re: Sidney E. Thompson. Check out similar spellings such as Thomason, Thomson, Thomas, etc. It's a common occurance. Also check to see if there is a listserv for Cherokee County. Someone local would be able to check the Mt. Zion cemetery for you and possibly send you a photo of the headstone.

Good luck

I am having a hard time locating two death certificates for North Carolina- they must be listed incorrectly. I'd love to find an obituary or a notice in the newspaper if the DC is unavailable.

I am trying to find my great-great-grandfather, Sidney E. Thompson of Marble, Cherokee County, NC- he died in either 1938 or 1939 and is buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church outside of Marble.

I am also searching for a mention of Nancy Garner Ellenburg that ran a mill in the Highlands area and died in NC around 1952. She was my grandfather's great-grandmother. He attended her funeral but I can find no mention of her death or funeral service.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'd appreciate any advice you may have.

Thank you in advance-
Julie

Hi Stephen, there is a death certificate for William F Swygart in the North Carolina Death Records database on ancestry.com. Please let me know if you do not have a subscription and would like a copy of it. He died 24 Aug 1911 in Mooresville, Iredell Co., NC. He was born 10 Mar 1867 in Germany.
