I am also in the Social Media course.  It has been a good experience and I am trying to get my other Genealogy group members to see that social media is a good thing for our society.

I, too , am in the Social Media course.  I began to do genealogy in earnest when I retired in 1998.  At this point I am left with about four seemingly impenetrable brick walls so that most of the online searching that I do finds no records and no one also looking for the same thing.

I am also enrolled in the Social Media course.  It has been a good experience and I have tried out additional social media sites that I hadn't experienced before.  It is a good overview of many of the available social media sites.

Hi, I'm also enrolled in the Social Media course. I was extremely nervous about Social Networking until this course and now I feel way easier with it.

I am in my third year of studies at NIGS and will eventually have my certificate in Canadian records and Librarianship. But that won't stop me from continuing with other courses - there is so much to learn!

I am currently taking the Social Media for Genealogists class. I have taken a few other classes in the past and I really enjoyed them.

I am a graduate of the National Institute, having completed the Certificate in the area of Canadian Records in 2008. To date I have completed something in the order of 45 courses and am currently taking the Social Media course in order to become more familiar with current technological means of finding and conveying information. As a full-time member of the workforce I have found taking the online courses an excellent way to increase my knowledge base during non-work hours.

I am currently completing the Social Media for Genealogists course.  I have previoulsy done courses with the NIGS in Methodology and Australian Records.

I have enjoyed the courses I have done so far and find the website easy to navigate in order to find readings and enter submissions etc.  I've also enjoyed the online meetings.

Genealogy Courses

It is interesting to read all the positive response regarding NIGS. I notice some individuals are or have taken courses with other organizations. It would be interesting if some of us would rate or compare courses they have taken at other organizations.

I will start it off by indicating I have taken a course at Pharos in the UK. This is also an on-line course and although interesting because it was in a different subject it did not seems to be as good as the NIGS courses. At the time there was no system to receive any kind of credit for taking the course.

I have also attended some live sessions for professional genealogists and how they run their business. These provided some insight but again there is no credit or records for taking these sessions. Although I volunteer to help others from time to time genealogy is a hobby for me not a business.

So if I am rating genealogy courses on a scale of 1 to 5, five being excellent, I would give NIGS a 5 and Pharos a 3.

Anyone else want to compare course, it could be helpful to the rest of us considering additional courses.

Hi,  I am fairly new to the group and am in the Social Networking for Genealogists class.  I have been searching my ancestors for almost 20 years.   Several years ago my husband & I took my mother to her Ancestral villiages in Slovakia.  I located the villages studying my grandparents immigration records.  Mom was 83 years old and got to meet several of her first cousins for the very first time.  Now we Skype with some of them.  Genealogy is a very rewarding and challenging hobby.  I have taken several classes so far and they were very helpful.

Hello, I am new to the group.  I am in the Social networking course. I am searching for Coughlans and McAstockers in Ontario and Ireland.
