Hi,
Can you help before i go crazy. I have a new laptop and am trying to transfer my Families from my old one to my new one. I have a folder called Legacy Data where i keep my files but when I try to open them on the new pc Legacy goes to Tempory Internet files to find them. I have tried changing the destination folder in Backup but it still does the same thing. The new laptop has windows 7, as did the old one.
If I back them up to the Legacy Data folder why doesnt it look there.
Any help PLEASE
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
I am a bit confused concerning your problem. You are referring to 'Backup Files' [familyfile.zip], but you are talking about opening your family files [familyfile.fdb]. If Legacy is going to Temp Int. folder why don't you simply migrate to the correct folder? Also, check again in Options > Customize > Locations, that it shows C:\Legacy\Data in the top box. If you only have one family file I would also look in the General tab, second section, and select 'Always open this file', then click on the drop-down and select your "familyfile.fdb", If, in that box, it has gone to Temp. Int. folder, migrate to C:\Legacy\Data and select your family file.
Go to your Legacy Data folder and double click on the file which you wish to open. Legacy should then remember where you stored them. This assumes that you have your file associations set btw. If not you will be asked to identify which program to use, select Legacy (obviously).
Hi Carolyn,
As I am not sure about how things need to be setup in Windows 7 I will stick to what I do know that is;
If you have copied you data files direct for example family.fbt to say a USB drive of one sort or another then there ought not be a problem with the file itself, this file is on the CD supplied and may be in the download as well.
If you installed the 7.0 version of Legacy SE then you may have an issue of Legacy not recognizing the files, that being the case this is easy to sort out by first getting Legacy 7.0 to find the sample.fbt file that is the sample Database as such.
Once you have done this visit the legacy home site from within Legacy and get the program to download the latest build, once it has done this and installed the latest build you ought to be able to click on file and go direct to the folder / director that you have placed your Family.fbt file into.
I had to do this recently myself due my hard drive on my desktop computer having been reformatted.
This works and got me back to where I was before my issues that I had with the hard drive.
Glad I had back up data and also Backup GEDCom files especially so with over 4,000 individuals in the data file.
Supposed to read;
If you have Legacy 7.0 SE installed ex the CD supplied or from a download then it is likely that the "sample.fbt" file is included, that being the case when you open Legacy click on File , Open Family File and select the "sample.fbt" file as the data file due to the fact that Legacy 7.0 with a build of any date prior to 1 September 2009 will not recognize the data used by the 1 September 2009 build.
By Opening the "Sample.fbt" you can get around this issue of not being able to get at your current data from build 1 September 2009.
Once you have the sample file open click on the Legacy Home tab within Legacy and get the program to check for the latest build, Legacy ought recognize that the current build on your machine does not match the current build that is available and will download and install the latest build.
Once this is complete click on File and Open Family File and go to the drive, folder / director that you have placed your Family.fbt file in, you ought to now be able to open this file and do what you want.

Hope this helps some.
Hi,
Thanks for all your help. I have the de luxe version of Legacy. I am talking about fdb files.
I have tried changing the location to Legacy/Data in options but it still reverts back to the Tempory Files Folder. I have the latest build. I have 5 families to look at. I have never had this problem with my other Laptop.
I had my files saved to an external hard drive and put them into Legacy/Data in my new laptop but it still looks for them in the temporary folder.
I know I can go and find them but why doesn't it take me straight there.
Anyway I appreciate your help.
Carolyn
Carolyn,

I have come across this before, sometimes it just goes walk about and links to the Temp file, it has never happened to me but it has happened to my brother in law.

If you open Legacy and go to File>Open Family File, then at the top of the form you will see a drop down box, set this to your Legacy/Data folder and it should stick. Do ensure before you save and back-up the .fdb file that it is your latest version.
