Hello, I'm relatively new to the genealogy wise website.  My personal research involves mostly Pike and Floyd counties in eastern Kentucky.  I presently live in central Kentucky, in Bourbon county, and occasionally make the trip back home.  I am a part-time Professional Genealogist as I have a regular full-time job as a Microbiologist/Lab Supervisor for the Water Treatment Plant for the City of Paris in Bourbon county.

Someone who has done some work with ELDER out there?

I wonder if perhaps you could help me with a little mystery...

Clara Levinia Whitfill (b. 19 Aug 1860, Grayson County KY; d. 13 Apr 1940, Jefferson County, KY)

daughter of Thomas Jefferson Whitfill and Elizabeth Ann Nokes.

was first married (14 Nov 1879 in Grayson County, KY)  to Francis Greenberry Dalton (b. 10 May 1856, Breckinridge County, KY; d. 15 Apr 1898, Breckinridge County, KY)

The two had 8 children together for whom I can find record.  (Indeed, one of them being my 2nd great grandfather)

Just recently I kicked over an internet rock and discovered a marriage record from 8 Aug 1905 for Clara L Dalton, daughter of TJ Whitfill and Elisabeth Whitfill, to a Leonard Elder born in 1845, son of Jno. and Rachel Elder.

He would have been 60 at the time, while she was 46.

I can find NO records of this man anywhere.  No idea who he was beyond this one record.

When she died in Louisville in 1940, her name was given as "Clara Dalton" and she was eventually buried next to her first husband, Francis Greenberry Dalton, in St. Romuald Cemetery in Breckinridge.

So just when I thought I knew my 3rd great grandma, I find this little tidbit--do you have any idea who this Leonard Elder might have been?  Perhaps he died soon after the marriage? Perhaps it was one of those brief marriages of convenience that sometimes happened back then (widow in need of support, older widower in need of domestic help)?

Meant no disrespect but I am only a 5th gen Kentuckian and my Justinian Cartwright was in the 1790 census of KY.  He is my Rev War Patriot and is from VA

Also I am 12 gen from 1620 of George Soule of the Mayflower, so I knew there was no Kentucky then.

Wow 9 generations is great too.

Hello Julia. After reading your post I sat down to take a closer look. You are absolutly right. I am only the 9th generation to truely be considered a Kentuckian. So I stand corrected. LOL...the joys of genealogy.

Welcome, question, I know my math is not good but Kentucky became a state in June 1792, just wondering how you can be 13 generations. Kentuckians did marry young sometimes.

Hello everyone. So glad to find a group from Kentucky. I myself am a 13th generation Kentuckian. The names I am researching are Miller, Martin, Welch, West, Burris, Smith, Coffey, Barnett and Duncan, just to name a few.
