I cannot find either of these names in the 1880 census. I have found both in the 1910 census (I seem to have skipped 1900, so we'll omit that). Charles Ellis should be about 1 year old in 1880, and therefore living with his father. William Franklin lived for most of his life in and around Morganfield; Charles Ellis was born there (in 1879?) and died there in 1930, but as an adult he lived in Webster County, in Clay. Both were blacksmiths (as was Nelson Hamilton Aton, the father of William Franklin and also of Morganfield). These men are the grandfather, great grandfather, and 2-greatgrandfather of my husband on his mother's side.

Would William Franklin be somewhere other than Morganfield in 1880. I have examined the Morganfield census, as found on HeritageQuest, on a sheet by sheet basis, but have completely failed to find him.

Can anyone help?

Sue, have you tried Henderson County and Crittenden County as both of them borders Union County as well as Webster County. Also Union County is right across the river from Indiana and Illinois.

Joyce
Sue, did you look at the entire Union County census or just the Morganfield part?

Sue, I think I might have found William Franklin on the 1880 census. If I did then when they transcribed the census they put is name down wrong. This person wife's name is recorded "M. Janette". They are also listed next to the household of Nelson Aton. This is what I found. Like I said this is what they transcribed. But I am betting they are wrong.

Sue I was wrong with the last post. I found that out after I posted it. I did find a death certificate for Charles Ellis Aton which said he was 55 when he died in 1930 which would make his birth date 1875 instead of 1879. So he would have been a son by William's first wife. Maybe Charles was with his mothers family the "Russell". Do you know when she died?

Sorry about the earlier post.

I did find them on the 1900 Union County census though. He is listed as Aton, Frank W. Feb 1845, with wife Mary J, dau Mary V, dau Ada A and bro Charley.
Thank you for your help. I did find the same listings that you found. I did not think to look in Henderson and Crittenden counties, though. I will try those. I THINK that I searched all of Union County (because that is my habit), but I may have missed doing so this time, since I was getting tired.

I will look at the rest of Union County, and at Henderson and Crittenden counties. If those fail, I will cross the Ohio and look in the neighboring states. (Family information was that they stayed in Kentucky (but family information never mentioned Webster county either!).
