I am hoping to find info on James Atkin, a master mariner in Hull from the late 1830's through the 1850's. He was the son of Isaac Atkin and was married to my ancestor Mary Leader of Bridlington. I am wondering if there is information available on mariners from that time period and how I would go about finding it. Does anyone know the exact definition of a master mariner?

Hi Doreen, my great great grandfather John Thompson was also a master mariner in Hull about this time. The National Archives and the Guildhall Library in London hold lots of records about individual Masters, I had great fun looking up John and found all his voyages as a master and his shipwrecks! If you go to the National Maritime Museum website

they have a number of research guides to help you.
Have fun
