My problem is that I live in 2 different places for 5 months, TX and 7 months, RI. I have a PC in each place. I have a laptop for traveling and an external hard drive as well.
I am about to purchase FTM 2010 but would like to keep my 2006 FTM data as well. My 3 children have stored my data on their computers for me as a back-up. They are using the 2006 version. I email them GEDcoms for updates to their files. I would appreciate any suggestions to make my "life" simpler.

Judy,

Thank you --- it's easier to keep discussions going this way, I think.

Actually, you just described how to do what you want to do. Unless you have a Family Tree Maker User Home Page, you can do what you have suggested. I would Install Version 2010 on both of your computers and on the Laptop. Use the External Drive for your Family File and the Back Up. Continue to Email the GEDCOMs has you have been doing. Version 2010 had a specific Export for Version 2006 and Version 16.

I am guessing that the External Drive is connected with a USB port, just detach and re-attach as you go from place to place.

I would make one more suggestion, keep a Back Up of the Version 2010 File on the Computer that you are leaving and keep another Back Up on your Laptop.

Does that help?
