History of Cape Cod

In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold named it Cape Cod, the surviving term and the ninth oldest English place-name in the U.S. Samuel de Champlain charted its sand-silted harbors in 1606 and Henry Hudson landed there in 1609. Captain John Smith noted it on his map of 1614 and at last the Pilgrims entered the "Cape Harbor" and – contrary to the popular myth of Plymouth Rock – made their first landing near present-day Provincetown on November 11, 1620. Nearby, in what is now Eastham, they had their first encounter with Native Americans.

Cape Cod was among the first places settled by the English in North America. Aside from Barnstable (1639), Sandwich (1637) and Yarmouth (1639), the Cape's fifteen towns developed slowly. It is in these fifteen towns on this small peninsula that many of the United States early colonial families settled, worked, and eventually (in some cases) spread out to other colonies.

Families 'Round the Cape invites you to share your genealogical findings, discuss topics of interest and history, and help us plot the trees of our common ancestors.

Carole,

There are loads of online references to the Allen's in Bridgewater. I think you've hit the mother lode.

Carole,

In the hunt for Samuel Allen, Sr, found:

http://webspace.webring.com/people/iu/um_5288/d27.htm#P5378

I have my eye on the Samuel b. 1630 in MA, d. 1703 Bridgewater. parents Samuel Allen & Anne Whitmore. One son listed is Samuel b 4 Dec 1660 m1 Rebecca Cary, m2 Mary

this site shows no sources, but suggests Samuel Sr was 2nd generation. Traces Samuel Sr's line back 3 generations to John Allen b. 1543 Saltford, somerset, England

Carole, I looked at Asahel Allen on your website. It looks like the Allen's in the East Bridgewater Vital Records are a good match. "Rhoda Tilson" could be "Rhoda Fillson"

Anyway, I realized that Asahel, Jr's birth record was not among those I found. In the front matter for the East Bridgewater volume it says that East Bridgewater was partitioned from Bridgewater in 1823, after ALLEN events in my list. So, I took a look at the ALLENs in the Bridgewater Vital Records.

These appear to be birth dates, rather than the baptismal dates in the East Bridgewater list. For example:

"Ambrose, ch. Ezra and Phebe, Aug. 11, 1784." [Bridgewater VR]
"Ambrose, s. Ezra, bp. Aug. 15, 1784, C.R.1" [East Bridgewater VR]

After a quick glance, it appears that it would be well worth your time to look at these vital records, both Bridgewater and East Bridgewater Several generations of Asahel, Sr ancestors are suggested, and, with some work, siblings, families, etc. could be reconstructed. Asahel, Jr's birth record was not found in Bridgewater VR either, suggesting the possibility that he was not born in Massachusetts, perhaps in Vermont like his sister Rhoda?

Do you have online access to the Massachusetts Town VR?

I wonder if David Clark is related to the Richard Clarke that came over on the Mayflower. I have a David Clark b 1732 Harwich, MA in my family line.

I know Plymouth makes a lot of money from tourism with the Mayflower but I wish they would change this and many other things such as Christopher Columbus in the history books.
