Hi Shar,

Welcome to the group! It's a small genealogy world with your Sussex County connections. We share some lines, and when I checked your profile, I saw that you also have lines that married into some of mine. One ggg grand-aunt married a Van Ness, and while most of these connections are on my father's side of the family, 2 relatives on my mother's side married Rutan men. I don't know their genealogies, but I think they must be from the same Rutan family. The 2 Rutan men married into one of my Rochester, NY families. I know that there was a Rutan farmstead maintained as a museum or part of one in Sussex County. I think it was part of Waterloo Village, which may not be staffed as fully as it was a few years ago, but I hope that it is still active.

My ggg grandmother was Catherine Demarest (b. 26 May 1756, NJ) m. James (Jacobus) Jacobus (bap. 11 Feb. 1756, Pompton Plains, NJ). Her daughter, Sarah Jacobus (b. 1799) married Col. William Willis Pearce (b. Feb. 1793), my paternal gg grandparents. James Jacobus resided in the Pochuck/Amity area of Sussex Co., NJ, Orange Co., NJ. The couple moved to the Lake Seneca, NY area by about 1804 but retained land in Sussex Co., NJ. James died about 1809. Catherine Demarest then married Jonathan Pearce, a widower (evidently) 1764 - 1838) who was the uncle of her future son-in-law. He had small children. She evidently raised them. She died near Naples, NY. The Pearces had removed to Ontario (later Yates) Co., NY about 1804 (Benton) as well.

Catherine's parents were Guliam Demarest and Susan or Sussana Rethan or Rutan. James' parents were Simon Jacobusse and Hendrickje Bartholf or Bertholf. Hendrickje's parents were Hendrick and Marritie Bertholf (who trace to a TerHuyne). My understanding is that Hendrick Bartholf was a sea captain and known as "the Ethiopian." I would like to know more about him and noted others blogging post a link to the Bretholf line.

I would appreciate receiving any information on Guliam Demarest. What I have is the following:

"David Demarest an Marie Sohier,at Middleburg, Zeeland, Holland French Huguenots. Children: Jean, b. Middleburg, 1645, David, b. Mannheim, 1652 and Samuel, b. Mannheim, 1656. David was born in 1620 in Beauchamps, France. He migrated to NY in 1665, sailing on the Bontek (Cow), arriving in New Amsterdam, NY, passage money $39.00. In 1665 the family moved to New Holland, NY. In 1667 the Tappan Indians sold land on the Hackensack River, NJ to David Demarest; in 1678 he settled in Hackensack, NJ with his family. In 1698 he died.

Here is a brief sketch of my Demarest line.

One of my great great great grandmothers was a Sarah Demarest, wife of William Sutton. William was born October 5, 1807 and died April 11, 1880. He is buried at Lockwood in Byram, Sussex County, New Jersey. Sarah was born about 1813 and died March 22, 1874. Her death record states that she was born in Bloomingdale, Passaic County, NJ to John and Susan Demarest. There is a John S Demarest in the Demarest genealogy, and I'm pretty sure that he and his wife Susanna Sindle are Sarah's parents, but I wish I had better documentation for this link. John is person 6-467 in the book, and he is listed as the son of Samuel Demarest and wife Albe. Samuel is listed as the son of Peter Demarest and Maria Demarest. Peter's parents were Samuel Demarest and Annatie Van Horn. The line continues back through Samuel Des Marets and Maria De Ruine to David and Marie Sohier Demarest. Maria's line includes an extra generation. The line is David Demarest and Catherine Van Houten, David Demarest and Sara Bertholf, David Demarest and Rachel Cresson, and David Demarest and Marie Sohier. The book says that David's parents were Jean Des Marets and Marguerite deHerville. It seems that most of these generations can be verified using church records. If I could document the link between Sarah, John, and Susanna a little bit better, it would probably be smooth sailing back to Jean and Marguerite. The book does not list Sarah as a child of John and Susanna, but it cites the 1830 census for Hardyston Township as the source of information on the children, so it's clearly a little flaky for this generation. The death record linking Sarah to Bloomingdale in Passaic County is a pretty good connection to John and Susanna, since they were married at Pompton Plains. I'm not sure that I've exhausted the usual sources for this family. I haven't done much research with Passaic County records.

Ok, my Demarests and what a tangled web it is...through them I am now a ninth cousin to my own dad....I had to make the chart three times before I was convinced. Like Pam, I descend from David and Marie Sohier Demarest through two of their sons ...both Jan and Jacomina deRuine Demarest and Samuel and Marie deRuine Demarest....as I said, a tangled web. Suffice it to day when it gets more confusing when you get to Hendrick Banta..his first wife [Rachel Brower daughter of Leah Demarest Brower [Abraham] is a Granddaughter of Jan and Jacomina and Hendrick's second wife Antie Demarest [daughter of Samuel and Leah Demarest Demarest and granddaughter of Peter and Maretie Meet Demarest and gt granddaughter of Jan and Jacomina] are closely related. We won't even get into Samuel, son of Samuel and Maria......and yes there is probably some madness in the family as a result of all this intermarrying.

We get to grandchildren of Rachel and Antie...they then marry and come down to me. Confused yet? I was for months till a chart simplified it a bit...the same one I am using now to write this. LOL
