Hi Everyone!

You can find some Demarest information on the Olive Tree Genealogy site. Check: www.olivetreegenealogy@yahoogroups.com
The information comes from the Reformed Dutch Church of Hackensack & Schraalenburgh,NJ.

Hi Mary,

I don't think that you are the one with a spelling problem. It's our ancestors that had the problem! Well, at least they did by modern standards. I think paper was relatively expensive back then, and probably ink was, too. Certainly the act of writing was more difficult, and many people were not literate, to the extent that they could not have told others how to spell their own names. Standardized spelling just didn't work under those conditions, and I guess it could be said to be a recent development. I'm not really sure when different lines decided on what constituted their preferred spelling for the family surname, but I think that before that, any reasonable spelling would have been considered acceptable. It sounds like you have done very well in figuring out who many of your ancestors were, in spite of the numerous spellings they used for their family surnames. Sometimes I find it a little tricky to find records where the surnames are spelled differently. It can be easier to do that when using an index that can be browsed than when doing searches electronically.

Hi Mary!

I descend through Samuel Demarest & Marie deRuine then their son David Demarest & his wife Matie DeBaun through their son Samuel DeMaree & his wife Leah Pieters Demarest through their daughter Antie Demarest 2nd wife of Hendrick H.Banta.

Samuel(the 1st one) parents were David Demarest & Marie Sohier. I have that David's parents were: Jean DeMarets & Margarite DeHerville. I have Marie's parents as Francois Sohier & Margrieta ? Do you have anything different?

Glad to meet you cousin!

Pam,

I born in Evansville, Indiana and grew up in and around Petersburg, Winslow and Evansville. I go home several times a year. Since Perry County is not far from Evansville, would you be interested in meeting to share what we have and get to know each other.

My line goes thru Judith Demarest who married Pieter "Pieree" Durie (not sure of the exact spelling). Her parents were Samuel Desmarest and Maria DeRuine. I have been having trouble with the exact spelling of Demarest, expecially since it is spelled so many different ways in the records) I am having the same trouble with all my Ductch ancestors which are many.

I am very happy to find this group as I have been researching this branch of my family lately! I have information that shows David Demarest and Marie Sohier as my 10th great grandparents! So happy to join many of my cousins with our research. What an inspiring legacy left by this wonderful family!
