Janet - I'd be very interested in a few copies of the book. Both my mother and uncle are descendants of William Kelly and Sarah Fulford and have both been to the village. I've only been there through the wonders of Google street view. Chris

Rickards Row is still Rickards Row. Lakes belonged to the Coach and Horses (run by the Lake family) but we aren't sure exactly where it was or if it still exists. Shaptons is also still here but no longer called that - I believe it is now Verbena Cottage. If anyone knows anything about the occupants of the Coach and Horses (apart from what is in the censuses) we'd love to know as a history of the pub is being compiled as part of a proposed book on Buckland Brewer

The "Coach and Horses" still exists - or it did last year (see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/660332).

I suggest that you look at Google street-view. This would seem to have great coverage of this village. The Inn is on the corner of Orleigh close (the Inn's car park is off that road) and the "main road". Carry on up the main road and you will see the monument outside of the Lych gate of the parish church - opposite which is the Methodist church. Walking back down the road towards the Inn you start by passing a big sign for F.J.Babb - the Butchers at Batesons. I understand that you can then spot Rickards and Shaptons - but I need to spend more time - or even visit the place.

William Kelly married Sarah Jane Fulford in Buckland Brewer and moved to Chelsea London where he became a manufacturer of carriages and also raised a family.
They returnedto Buckland Brewer about 1900 and died soon after.

Hi Everyone, My connection with Buckland Brewer is through William Cole and Charity Heal; although my ancestor's death registry indicated her surname was Ale and one of his siblings listed it as Hale...I thought I'd just post in case others are interested in the same line :o) Thanks! Rhondda
