Fulford family
Hi everyone, like Ruth Raintree, I am also a great-granddaughter of John and Margaret Fulford who settled in North Queensland, my father being Henry Fulford. I have also recently become interested in family history. My dad, who died in 2004 aged 92, did a couple of trips to Devon and Buckland Brewer, so I have photographs that he took while there. I know that he visited and became friends with Ivor and Mary Fulford and corresponded with them. I note from my father's address book that they lived in West Wales in Hakin. I seem to recall that Ivor was the son of John Fulford's brother. I don't know which one. Maybe someone knows?.I have in my possession a framed embroidery done by Elizabeth Lea Tancock aged 15 in 1835. She was John Fulford's mother.
Anyway I've broken the ice. By the way I notice the name Gray in the group. My mother was a Gray and the great-grandaughter of a John Gray who, with his family, came to Australia in 1841 and settled in Victoria. Just a bit of trivia.

I'm interested in the photos your Dad took in Devon & Buckland Brewer. Did Henry identify any of them as, say, houses our ancestors lived in or other landmarks directly associated with our Fulford ancestors? More later. Ruth Raintree

Yes Ruth his has written on the back of some of the photos he took while in Buckland Brewer. Without looking now I know one was a house opposite the church where John Fulford mother died. Her husband had given the land to have the church built. Another was of an old mill that Dad says was owned by his great-grandfather. Also a butcher shop. Could be other places as well. He was shown these places by Ivor Fulford so I don't doubt that they are correct. I will have a look when I get back and you can have copies when I learn how to copy and send.

Ah, Eileen, I have copies of those photos - from cousin Norman Millward - he also mentioned Ivor's name in relation to them. Maybe he got them from you or your Dad back in the late 1990s when he was doing most of his research. I also visited those places when I was in Devon last year so now have a modern version of them. Thus, you don't have to send them to me.

I guess Ruth that Norman Millward got those photos from Dad or else Margaret from Toowoomba. She visited Dad and Alice a few times. Dad is standing in a few of them so Alice probably took the photos. There are some of Ivor and Mary Fulford as well. I haven't really sorted Dad's stuff yet, just put it all together so it wouldn't get lost. A lot of the old photos are very knocked about so I hope Sarah's sister can do something with them. I had some of my mother's old photos restored and the last by, of all places, and the cheapest, at BIG W. They did a good job but it was still expensive. By the way I have never met Norman but I did meet Margaret and her mother many years ago when my son was at boarding school in Toowoomba. Just the once.
When you were here did you get a copy of a photograph of JohnFulford with the men of his family (Brothers and cousins) taken when he went back to England in 1901? Or did you get one of Granie Fulford with Nurse Wardle taken at the house at Kuranda? She was in her 90s . Bye, Eileen

I think the photo would be of Chuch Gate Cottage by the Anglican Church. The Methodist Church/Chapel is opposite next to teh butcher's shop - I live on the other side of the chapel.

Hi Christopher, I'm wondering if you are referring to John Fulford? My Great-grandfather was John who came to Australia around 1860. His father was also John and I think there was another one before that. My father was Henry John Fulford. I have quite a bit of family information which needs organising. A couple of names on my Devon family tree are Shapton and Tancock. All seemed to come from around Buckland Brewer area. On my mother's side my Great-great-grandfather was John Gray who came to Australia in 1840. He and his wife were born in Yorkshire in 1810. She was Hannah Kitchen/ing. They were married in Babworth, Nottinghamshire. They settled in the Geelong district of Victoria. A lot of farmers both sides of my family. Probably my Gray family are not related to yours. People didn't seem to move around too much those days. Don't know if this information is of any interest to you but best wishes, Eileen

Hi - thanks for the response. My GRAY family comes from Yorkshire - from East Cottingwith a few miles to the south east of York. My mother's side come from the south west of England - seemingly from the border area between Devon and Cornwall. Then they spent some time in the Buckland Brewer area - seemingly close friends of, and marrying into, the FULFORD, ROWE and LAKE families. Interesting times. Chris

My Shapton family connect to the fulford family via John Fulford (1783 - 1863) and his marriage to Grace Shapton (1784-1858) - my 3rd great aunt. I'd be interested to communicate and exchange information with anyone in the fulford family connected to "my" fulford, and perhaps understand more about the fulfords and shaptons in Buckland Brewer.
