Happy Christmas Everyone! We are still collecting photos of old Buckland Brewer and its previous residents (contributions welcome). One day we hope there will be a new book about the parish - we're working on it! Thanks for your support.

Hello everyone,
Pleased to see all the recent activity. We had a display of old photographs in the village on Saturday - many thanks to Ron How and his wife for coming all the way to Devon especially to see us. We had 50-60 vistors and the afternoon slide show was standing room only. We collected some new pictures and put names to faces in some we already had. We are hoping, eventually to publish a book about the village. If anyone has any old photosgraphs that we could copy that would be great. we often find those who no longer live in the area have the greatest treasures.

Ah - as you will know - John FULFORD (1783-1863) had a brother Philip (1795-1877). Philip (and his wife Ann) had a daughter - Sarah Jane - who married William KELLY. It is from William and Sarah Jane that I am descended.

The families of Buckland Brewer make an interesting study.

Wow, indeed, Chris! Please tell me more - which sibling of John or Grace is your Mum's direct ancestor? Cheers, Ruth

Wow - great to hear from you and especially to hear that you're related to John & Grace. Australasia is becoming more and more a key part of my family history. My mother is the "second great great niece" of John & Grace. Chris

Greetings from a new group member. I can happily say I visited Buckland Brewer in September 2009 while on a self-inflicted Family History Tour. What a delight! I'm proud to include this picturesque part of Devon as part of my 'family footprint' on this Earth. As I've just told the Fulford Family Group, I'm a 2nd great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Fulford (1813-1901), daughter of John Fulford (1783-1863) and Grace Shapton (1784-1858) both of Buckland Brewer. As it happend, I'm also the 2nd great-granddaughter of her brother, John Fulford (1815-1879) who moved to Northam after marrying Elizabeth Tancock (1820-1911) in 1840. How that came about is quite another story. I'm particularly interested in learning more about pre-1841 Census Buckland Brewer and any part my family line may have played in its life and development. More as time goes on ---- Cheers, Ruth Raintree

Ron,
I always thought wills/probates for Devon were hard to obtain? What process did you go through to get yours? Have you tried googling Castle cottages, a few property sites pop up http://www.housepricespy.com/england/bideford/buckland-brewer/

Hope this helps

Probate Records indicate my g/g gandfather William Kelly lived in Castle Cottage Buckland Brewer at the time of his death in 1909 does this still exist?

Rendell & Bess Austin, June 16, 2001. Snapshot taken on our front porch by my son, Gregory Dale Austin. I have been having trouble with "Adding Images," so all suggestions are most welcome!

Greetings Everyone!

I am Rendell John Austin, Age 72, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I am a descendant of Austin families of Buckland Brewer! We have verified all but two of the family; still looking for William and Grace; children of my 2d Great-Grandparents, Thomas and Mary Manning Austin. William Austin was born about 1825. He was involved in the California "Gold Rush" of 1849. The other unverified child of Thomas is Grace Austin, born about 1820.

I believe Grace married William Hern at Torrington, Devonshire, the last quarter of 1844. I have ordered the marriage record, but have not received it. Their first child, Mary Ann Hern, was born about 1844. Their 2d child, Charles Henry Hern, was born in the Town of Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA, December 1848. As yet, I have not located Baptismal or Immigration records for either William or Grace.

I have been doing genealogical research since June 1993, with I believe extraordinary success!
I am pleased to have been able to join the Buckland Brewer Parish group for I believe the group is the most likely resource for resolving missing family information.

Yours Truly,
Rendell John Austin
