Genealogy Wise

The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

A Discussion Forum for all Genealogists to post Family, Legal and Historical related slave material.

This includes information to online and/or offline resources pertaining to period data - Wills, Estate Inventories, Journal and Bible Records, Deeds, Bills of Sale, Indentures, Records of Manumission, etc.

As descendants of emancipated African-Americans, these materials are the key to uncovering our family lineage.

Thank you for your support.

1860 Large Slave Holders/1870 African-American Surname Matches - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ajac/
Hi Luckie:
I looked this over; nice resource. Working on AprilDawn's Lewis Siler challenge (GW group, Most Wanted! Ancestors Lost and Found) we have been developing resources about a large slaveholder, Solomon Siler, and his relations of Pike Co., Ala; Solomon died prior to 1860; his estate perhaps divided among widow and children. The Siler slaveholders of Pike Co., Ala didn't seem listed --perhaps I missed it. --GJ

Arvid O. Siler, The Siler family: a compilation of biographical and historical sketches ([?]: Tribune Printing Co., 1922); digital images, Google Books (http://books.google.com : ... ), for mention of Philip Siler, Jr. (#60, p. 47) , who had "seven sons...," at least some of whom are known to have removed from North Carolina to Alabama [likely the area of Pike County]; names of those sons given as, Allen Siler, Jackson Siler, Crabtree Siler, John R. Siler, Solomon Siler, Durham W. Siler, and Willis (Dock) Siler; also for mention of Solomon Siler (#68, p. 49), who was born at Chatham County, North Carolina and moved to Orion [Pike County], Alabama before the Civil War; prio to his death, had "emassed a great fortune ... and owned over 4 hundred slaves." Therein, sons of Solomon include Quintius Park Siler (no. 72), Octavious Siler and Crabtree Siler.
