Hi Carol,
I can understand your father's reluctance to share info. Many Germans in his generation are very closed-mouthed about their history. My grandmother was born in Goldap, Germany (E.Purssia) in 1884 & when her family came to the US in the 1850's they didn't want to talk about their past. Even in the 1920s when my father was born she didn't want to talk about it. He said she had said it was hard to be German outside of Germany because of WW1.

Do you know anything about your grandparents? Even just knowing their names will help. You can get on familysearch.org & do a general search on their names. They should be listed in the Social Security Death Index if they died in the US. Also search on your father's name. He may be listed on a census somewhere. If you click on the "pilot" search tab you might get a hit. Good luck & happy searching,
Linda
